I have a 1989 Johnson 225 HP and have to either rebuild the lower unit or replace it.
What years are compatible with this engine?

Re: 225 Lower Unit

Any V6 unit from 1979 on will work. When you get into the newer ones youll notice there is no O ring on the top of the driveshaft. Just grease the splines once a year and you'll be OK if you use a good waterfroof marine grease.

The older V6 units (1976-78) have a barrel deal that screws on the top of the shift shaft. That one wont work. You need the shift shaft that screws in and out. Use your existing shift shaft if it's different than yours.

Make sure you get a true V6 unit. It'll have a 1.86:1 gear ratio. Dont get the V4 gearcase thats the same size as the V6. It has a weird gear ratio and a small pinion nut. V6 torque will kill it eventually.

V8 units will work but have another ratio. They are bigger so you can measure yours and tell. V4 units from 1979 & up will bolt on but you dont want that. The V4 has a coarse thread for the prop nut, the V6 nut is a fine thread. Your prop will be to big for the V4 shaft.

If you have a performance type hull, try to get the new Lightning gearcase.
