Hi folks. I recently had both my 225 3.0 carburated mercs unhooked from remote oil and power for about 2 months while I rewired. After hooking back up for the first 2 or 3 minutes they run there is A LOT of blue smoke pouring out the exhaust . After shut down they both drip a black oil/fuel mix out the exhaust for hours. Enough to make a considerable puddle. I have read the other posts on oil in exhaust but and they say not to worry, this seems a bit extreme. My pressurization between the engine and remote oil tanks has been iffy also.(pressurized but not always filling) Could I have hoses crossed from the remote oil tank? Bad oil pumps? cylinders not firing? Any Ideas? THanks

Re: 225 Mercs...lots of oil in exhaust

I would expect a lot of blue (oil) smoke if they haven't been run for a while. Is this condition apparent EACH time you start? or was it just the initial start after the lay-up period? If you are in a warm climate it would be reasonable to expect the fuel to evaporate from the carbs, leaving oil in the float bowls, so the next time you start you'll be sending smoke signals to "them thar far hills".

Cheers,
Nicholas

By the way, thick, black, gunky oil/fuel seeping from the exhaust is not uncommon if an engine has been laid up for a while. The carbon dries up throughout the midsection and when the engine is next run the water through the exhaust dislodges the carbon and creates a runny blackish/grey muck that runs out the prop and the gap between the prop and the gear housing.
