Have a pair of '98 225's with the port one needing the bulb to be pumped up repeatedly. Have checked for leaks, both air & fuel, and found nothing. Any thoughts?

Is the bulb being sucked flat or is it just empty?

Re: 225 needs repeated priming

if they are the same, i had a 25 horse mercury doing the exact same thing, I had to pump the bulb otherwise it bogged down like someone was pulling on me and i would go slower and slower so i looked in the manuel and it said its either in the fuel line to the motor, or the fuel filter or the fuel pump. So i blew out the lines and replaced the fuel pump which looked bad and it runs like new again, or at least as good as a merc will run. hahaha hope this helps

Not flat, just soft. Pumped up to keep it running at idle. At speed it seems to work fine. Back off to idle and that engine dies. A couple pumps and away you go.

In case any of you are concerned I may hit an iceburg while testing in Lake Michigan, she is now in tropical waters where we are having the trouble.

Will the primer bulb get firm and hold before starting the engine? If not ,there is a leak or the float needles are not holding.

I did notice a little fuel dripping out from under the port cowling after fully raising the engines. It is coming from the bottom of the plastic air intake assembly where there was a small puddle.

What kind off hook-up have these engines to the fuel tank? If running out of fuel at idle, you may have a fuel pump getting weak, or a dirty carb not pulling fuel on the idle circuit.

10-4 evanduf. If squeezing the primer bulb at low speeds will get the engine on plane and perform at high throttle ,I tend to think your problem is fuel pump related.Possibly a leak on the crankcase pulse hose or a failing air motor diaphragm.Just a guess.

Is there a complete fuel pump rebuild kit? I'll check the pulse hose. Thank you for your thoughts

John/Rude dealer sould have a rebuid kit for your engines vro pump.Don't know if the kit contains parts for the oil portion of the pump though. There are also a few places on-line for parts if you don't have a dealer near you.

Thanks gentlemen. I'll pick up a kit or 2 for when I head down there again next month. Will post results mid April.
