Hey guys, been on the forum pretty often, been doing lots of searching and reading. I've searched quite a bit for the issues I'm having only to find a variety of different answers, so I figured I'd make my own thread and get the correct response.
I'm repairing the motor for a friend, I have a decent amount of experience with outboards and I'm very mechanically inclined, so I thought itd be a piece of cake, but it's turned into a nightmare.
Initially, it was having issues when going into gear. He'd put it in gear, and it would die. He said it ran fine on the way over to the island, it sat for a few hours, and then it started having problems upon departure.
I took it back to my shop, it ran great on the trailer, I was using the water attachment to run it. It idled fine, revved with no problem, didn't seem like anything wrong.
I proceeded to remove the screws that are on the front of each carburetor, and I pulled each of the jets out and cleaned them.
I replaced everything as normal, but now, the engine will not stay running for more than 15 secs.
Also, the primer bulb gets soft while running, and I have to pump it up again to restart the motor. I have tried pumping the bulb while the engine is dying, and it has no effect whatsoever.
I pumped some of the fuel into a clear container to check for water, and none was found.
I did notice a bit of fuel sitting at the bottom of the carburetors, perhaps it is a float adjustment issue? Also, I noticed that fuel was a bit milky, like it had water in it, which is what prompted me to check for water in the fuel.
I've done a spark check, it has good spark all across the board.
I tried running a compression test, but I could not get good results. I grounded the magneto (black wire w/yellow stripe), and cranked the engine. It would not crank any more than 2-3 revolutions upon which it would quit cranking, so I could not get a valid test. However, i ran the test as-is and got 90 psi across the board.
Tomorrow, I'm going to pull the carbs and give them a good cleaning. I'm also going to change all filters.
Before doing any of that, I'm going to run it on an external tank and see if I still have issues. If so, I'll pull the carbs and give it a good cleaning.
Any input would be appreciated. I'd like to have him on the water before the weekend if possible, he's a good friend and I owe him several favors.
If you guys have any other ideas please let me know.
