Reading through past posts I see this is recommended along with the VST Screen, but when I look at the schematics I don't even see a screen (filter) on the injectors. I have done the VST in the past (easy). I see the Pressure Regulator screen. This can be replaced for about 5$. I'm guessing just unbolt the pressure regulator from the VST and install the new screen or clean with carb cleaner. Do the injector screens require sending the injectors off for cleaning. I'm clueless on those, as I have never had the fuel rail off. I am guessing the injector screens are incorporated into the injector and are not removable? The model number is VX225TLRB, (2003 225 Vmax). Thanks.

The Filter in question is #23 on the schematic.
it's at the bottom of the fuel pump.

The answer to your question is yes the screens are built into the injectors and no they can't really be cleaned by you....but you can sorta with some POWERTUNE(only thing Mercury makes i like), but you WILL need new o-rings for injectors, not an optional thing on these. And it may or may not help, but soak the injectors in powertune for thirty minutes, don't soak all night.

Is this really a mandatory maintenance item?

#23 is the VST Screen. I regularly clean this one.

while not a regular maint item its nice to peridically send the injectors to an injector shop to have the screens replaced and the injectors flow tested and checked for proper spray pattern and leakge.
cost about 30 dollars or so per injector.
I send mine to flagship marine in FL simply cause UPS delivers.
the orings are completly reusable if not damaged, use a bit of light oil or two strokeoil as a lubricant during installation.
so far the only non-reusable injector sealing rings are on the Z(HPDI) motors on the cylinder head side.
rail side on Z motors are reusable if not damaged.

pressure regulator screens get cleaned about every 3rd VST filter cleaning or if an over pressure is noted.
of if the system has injested large amounts of trash or watery debris.

Thanks for all your replys. I have learned a lot on this site. Thank God I can work on this stuff. If I couldn't I wouldn't be able to afford the maintenance.

Just an FYI for you guys looking for a service manual. I bought one on Ebay that is a pdf for about $9.00. There are a bunch for sale. I don't how they get by the copyright, but it is being done.
