The boat has a chevy 350 small block in it. Motors basically done, fried. I did have a mercruiser in my old boat and would like to put another one in this new boat. I the boat is a 1973. Never done a swap out before and I am sorta confused on what motor i have to buy to put in it! The outdrive is a 106e in working condition, would rather not replace that. Bottom line is what motor can i throw in there? I would rather put a mercruiser in but if a chevy has to happen it will. Sort of a rookie when it comes to i/0's any help would be greatly appreciated! Anyway anyone know how the boat is overall? offshore worthy? Sturdy? Thanks!!

A Mercruiser 260 IS a chevy 350 engine. Just pull your old engine, strip the fruit and veg off. Find an old truck 350, strip it down and put the 'Mercruiser specific' fruit and veg on. The only thing you'll need to change on the engine block itself are the core plugs. Pull the old steel ones out and put nice shiny brass ones in. As long as you use the Mercruiser fuel and electrical system you'll be sweet with your safety features...

As long as you use all the old gear, including flywheel and coupler and flywheel housing, it should. The SEI 106 is just a copy of a Mercruiser Alpha One drive.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... Ya need a Pre-'86 motor, or better yet, a Pre-'79 motor to match what was there originally,...

The Long Block part of the complete motor is Chevy, the accessories bolted to that Chevy Long block are Mercruiser,...

Yer drive, is a SEI, an aftermarket copy of the Mercruiser Alpha 1,...
Yer transom assembly, 'n motor accessories are Mercruiser MC-1, if all is original,...

I think i have decided on rebuilding the motor that's in it. A valve went bad and got sucked into the cylinder. The valve is stuck between the the wall and piston. I'm going to ship it out and have it cut, honed, and put a sleeve in it, then new piston rings. Better idea then putting a new motor in it?
