Hi folks, while taking apart my 1981 evinrude 235 of course bolts broke off. 2 on the starboard side I drilled out and retapped with difficulty. But the port side has 10 broken studs and I don't feel like all that work. E-bay has port heads for sale cheap enough but I was under the impression the serial #s have to match the old head. Is this true? How important is matching castings on the port head? Wouldn't the head gasket fill in any casting mis-matches? Thanks in advance for any replies.

The numbers should be in sequence on crossflows. As an example the port head will be 123453 and the starboard head will be 123454.

There were a couple of sets depending on what year and what model but any can be used as a set as long as the numbers are in sequence. As long as they came off of a 2.6 crossflow.

Ok I'm back. Let me ask this, would a head with a non sequential serial # bolt up to my head. Assuming they are both evinrude 235's close to the same year? Thank you.

All I need is the port head I assume by your answer above you mean different serial #s will not bolt up. Are the bolt configurations different? For my motor the same head gasket covers years 1980 to 1985. wouldn't the port heads from those years match? Just asking.

The problem is that the wrong heads will bolt up. You can run 2 different heads as long as they're both from a 2.6 crossflow. However, I wouldnt because the combustion chambers will be different. If you run both matching heads from another year 2.6 cf thats fine.

Be careful because a 2.5 head will bolt up also. You wont get far as the pistons will hit.

If youre looking for a set of heads, yes the 235 from 1980 to 85 and the 175 from 86 to 91 will work. Or heads from a 2.6 Sea Drive. Or from a 2.6 XP / GT.

The trick is to end up with matching heads.
