Well,

I am new to this forum. I have been using it a while to get info so I figured it is about time that I participated. I am currently waist deep in a complete boat, engine, electrical overhaul on a 24' fiberform fishing boat. So far the boat is gutted and the engine was pulled with the help of a custom crane built on the back of my father in laws truck. The engine was stripped down and cleaned. Last night I painted some parts and the enigne. Had some trouble with the cam bearing install. So now I have to wait to order the right tool. I have made one out of a piece of all thread and a plate, it works great for removal but to install them I would need a seperate piece machined to make it work. I will probably break down and buy the tool. I will post pics of the tool so you all can make one if you want. To make one yourself would be about $15 vice 150+ to buy one. Any info on the rebuilding of a GM 250 165hp would be great. I will post pics of everthing later tonight.

I have over 12 years of mechanical and boating experience so I hope I can help out on this forum. I am also restoring a Chris Craft 31' Roamer - steel hull

This is the cam removal tool. Its just a threaded piece of steel, some nuts, washers and a piece of aluminum the diameter of the bearings. Here is the link for the piece I would need to make to use it for install too. Just change the size to meet your engine needs.

here is another link for a design for the piece

A tip to remove valve springs. buy the cheap $15 dollar tool. Install it and turn the head on its side. While pushing down on the head to compress the spring hit the bottom of the valve with a rubber mallet. Presto-change-o retainers come right off. Remove the tool and everthing just comes off. No need to buy an expensive tool. You can actually make this tool too if you have some scrap steel and a way to bend it.

So much still to do. That's a lot of parts!

More painted parts.

More to come this week when I get the rods to install. Then this baby goes back together.
If anybody knows where I can get a gm 250 timing cover for cheap let me know. This one has a hole in it.
