am putting together an 01, 14 ft. McKee Craft. former owners 40 h.p. was stolen off it. data plate says max of 40 h.p. and 850 lbs. want to hang a 25 merc classic. people suggest i may be cutting myself short. boat will carry 2 people, beach chairs, umbrella, beer cooler. it will not go out in the gulf. has anyone had or been around a set up like this? been a long time since i had a low h.p. motor, and hope to get it right the first time. speed is not important as long as it gets up on plane. thankyou for your input. fred

I have run JohnnyRude 25s on Boston Whaler 13s, Fred. They are also rated for 40hp max.

Planed easily with three aboard plus tackle, cooler, etc. Could reach 25mph (GPS) and cruised easily at 15-20mph.

Go for it. :)

Thanks for the response. I am sold. The mckee has a hull similar to the boston whaler so i should have no problem. I remember when the biggest thing you could buy was a BIG TWIN 25 and they worked real good on the wood boats in the 50s, but was a bit reluctant as anything less than a 40 are few around here. thanks for your help fred

Whitt is about 60 miles west of Ft. Worth, Fred.

I tell my friends from there to go west to the end of the world, then 10 miles north. :)

FRED - Pine Island brings back many fine memories of when our kids were young. We used to run over there to Cayo Costa and stay in the cabins on the beach for 3-5 days at a clip. That was back before the state got their hands on it. Rustic cabins right on the beach, no electricity, non potable water from a hand pump, pigs that drove us nuts butting the garbage cans in the middle of the night - - - shelling like folks dream about - - - and a place you don't want to go to in the summer due to heat & misquitos.

Do you ever get out there and what is it like now?

Re: 25 h.p. on 14 ft. McKee craft

Just bought a '69 Mckee craft with a 1984 40hp Mariner/Yamaha on it. She rides great on a calm lake, but can't wait to try her on the Chesapeake Bay when it warms up. I think it'll need a new prop. Current one is a 10"?? and is pretty dinged up. I'm open for suggestions on props for this beast. I too, have no tac on the boat, so I guess I need to chose wisely. i also want to put some rails on her. There's not much gunnel height on these babies. I'm not complaining. The thing is like a floating platform. Two of us (350lbs plus) leaned over one side and it barely listed. Anyway, any help/suggestions are appreciated on boat rails and motor. thanks.
