I have a motor that on the lower end you have your gear oil drain and fill. Above that on either side is a little hole. Now coming from that hole is oil on both sides. I assume that this is from the exhaust and the oil mixture is too heavy. Is this assumption correct?

It has been a while since i owned and outboard so i want to be sure this is not a major issue. This is above the lower end and the lower unit does not have foam or anything in it. I know that part is sealed and good.

Please let me know.

The oil you are seeing is most likely un-burned fuel/oil mixture. Not un-common, but can be a signal that your motor may be running rich, or is in need of a tune-up (ie: new plugs). Fuel/oil ratio is 50:1.

That is what i thought as well. I just was not 100% sure. This is a new boat to me. The other thing i am wondering about on this same motor it has an electric start and pull start. Will this machine charge my battery when in operation. The reason i ask is i have a fish finder and was thinking of adding my electric motor to it to be on safe side. I want to make sure i do not need to charge the battery if i can help it through the season. IF i have to oh well. I could care less about electric start but the other stuff i need battery.

I was also told with ethenol gas to to run the oil mix rich anyway. It seems right but the ethanol is in the gas to save teh environment and the extra oil polutes it.

If its factory electric start then it has charging capability. The starter generally doesn't drain your battery that much. I run a minnkota #55 troller motor and a '88 30 hp johnson on the same battery. I usually recharge the battery between trips, but I really don't have to. I doubt I could go an entire season without recharging it though. Good luck.

Have Lowrance fish lier on the front of the boat, Eagle fish ID lier on the back, Minnkota electric troll, am/fm/cd witch is always on. 87 40hp Jhon/Rude main, and a 76 6hp kicker. I have dual batteries and never been left stranded or out of battery power.

Re: 25 hp 1984 2 stroke

okay here is a question as well. I had not tried the electric start till today. When it engages the cog does not go up and hit the big gear. sorrynot sure part names. So the piston that comes out of the start has a cog on the end of it. This cog is suppose to connect with the larger cog on the top of the motor that the pull start is connected too. In fact there is about 1/2 inch or a little less of a gap between the two when engaged. Any suggestions?

The starter drive ( gear on starter) could be stuck, try some penatraiting oil and see if it will break loose. You could also have a defective starter drive.

So spray lubricant in the top portion of the shaft?

Now if the manual start has been used right along and not the electric start is it possible it is just disengaged somehow?

If the electric starter spins and the battery is hooked up properly, the system is not disengaged. Could be the previous owner did not want to hassel with a battery and just pull started it.

Does the starter motor spin when you turn the key? If so there is nothing to engage, you just have a starter drive problem.

Re: 25 hp 1984 2 stroke

thank you, the issue was the battery was no good and did not have the cranking power. Now next issue the motor will not idle low enough to troll so i am thinking of rebuilding carb. My concern now is the motor is too big for my boat. In fact i have no idea how previous owner kept it from flipping. The motor lifts the bow with 150lbs in it. 50 being my son and 100 being gear. This is also with the motor all the way down which should drive the bow down. I can run it on half throttle only i a scared the thing will go right over. the boat is rated for a 35 hp so i dont get it
