A friend of mine was checking his lower unit for water while getting his boat ready for winter. Unable to get the drain plug out he removed a small phillips head screw and was able to drain some gear oil. Trouble is the screw won't go back in. THe screw is right next to the drain plug. I haven't been to see it yet but it sounds like what is described on a chart as PIVOT PEN, Shifter lever. What does it do and how do I fix it?I am a pretty fair shade tree mechanic but I have never been into one of these gear boxes. So I'm a little hesitant about taking it apart. Any information tips or help of any kind will be welcome as always. Thank you all for this great service you provide. Using a web page I got here I was able to determine this motor to be a 1992. Thanks again.....Hank

Yep....pivot pin, holds the shift yoke in place and gives it something to pivot on. You might get lucky and play with the shift handle and get the holes lined up so the pivot pin can be re-installed. I've done that on a couple of occasions. A pick will help in moving the yoke around to get the holes lined up. Laying the engine on it's side sometimes helps.

Did the same thing, it cost me 130.00. but I did get new seals on an old motor.
