I bought a 25 hp evinrude for 30 bucks. I changed the points and then started it. It ran for about 20 seconds then died. After that it would not start again. It has spark( the hair standing on end tells me that). I don't know what to do, the motor is (in a german dialect) about to be swimming wit ze fishes. Please help. I just want to take my children fishing without outboard trouble again.

P.s. It has all the gas you'll ever need. the carb is working just fine. There is compression in both cylinders. I set the points to .020. Choke is working great. I am VERY frustrated with this engine. ANY help would be much appreciated.

Hello very frustrated,<br />If you would post the mod# and ser# of your motor maybe we could help you. You have to remember we can't see your motor, you have to help us help you. In the mean time relax. These are simple machines, sometimes it helps to think simple.

Maybe too much gas? If you get too much gas, and the spark is a little weak, it wont start. Recheck your points, and buy yourself a spark checker, it looks like a spark plug with an aligator clip on it.

My first hunch is that when you had the flywheel off to change the points, you didnt get the flywheel tight enough and it sheared the key. I see a dozen of these a year with a sheared key.<br /><br />Just my first thoughts. <br /><br />You may still have spark, but it wont be in the correct timing. I'd pull off the flywheel and check it. If it is the problem, get the proper replacement key from a dealer, dont put in a regular woodruff key, they are too soft.

You said it has compression. What were the readings?

The key isn't sheared. And I couldn't tell you what the compression readings are. It ran until I changed the points.

Could you tell us how you determined that:<br /><br />"P.s. It has all the gas you'll ever need. the carb is working just fine. There is compression in both cylinders. I set the points to .020. Choke is working great. I am VERY frustrated with this engine. You may have missed something without realizing it.<br />--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I understand your first and last post right, it was running OK and then you changed the points and it ran for 20 secs and died. Sounds like something was OK and then let go. I'd be making sure that the points retaining screw is tight and the points are still gapped right. Also check that the condensor is properly attached, and that anything else you touched is the way it should be.

You guys helped out a lot. There was one point off by about 10 thousandths, plus the plugs were completely fouled out. I changed them now the engine is surging, but I'm sure that's because the points are old and not exactly correct. Thanks for the help you are bad ass.

I respect everones views but if it were me id take off the carburetor clean it well / submurse if possible and blow it out with compressed air everywhere totally and I mean blast it. Put in a new kit to specs and I think it will do the trick when you think about the small stuff like .05 on the points you usually need to do the real thing. Im no carb freak but it is usually the first thing i would do.
