Have a 69' 25HP that I got from a buddy and hasent been ran in a few years...Went out and got a new plugs(yes there is spark) gas line and fuel filter...and a E-stop button...Problem that I am having is that when I prime the ball on the 5 gallon gas tank when it enters the engines male end it shoots all over...Do i need to replace this or is there a seal there...any other comments are greatly appreciated...I am new to outboard motors and never had to do any work on them so I thought I would give it a try before taking it to a mechanic...I figure that I might need to get the carbs cleaned too...IF you need any more information just ask as I am new to this!!

Oh ya Hey there all...

Re: 25 HP Evinrude????????????????

I know the male end has two prongs, one is the fuel, the other is to lock the connectors. From what I could see the female connector has the ball in it and o-ring to seal it when not in use. I don't think the fittings will connect backwards, to where the fuel connector is actually on the locking connector.

Hey lilyduck...welcome!

There is a replaceable o-ring in the quick connect but given the age of the engine, I would just get a new one. You might also take a look at the connector on the engine. Check it for burrs that might cut the o-ring on the hose connector. Little filing can take care of these.

Few things you may want to check....lower unit lube, spark and carb. Setting so long, I would guess a carb cleaning and over haul would be in order.

The ignition system is a standard point/condenser system....coils and points under the flywheel. If you don't have spark, pop the flywheel and look at the coils and points. If coils are cracked, replace them. Check the points are clean and not burnt. Points are set at .020.

Check the lower unit lube does not have water in it and replace with fresh lube.

Check the water pump. I would replace it. Drop the lower unit and the pump housing sets right on top of it.

Scare ya' yet........ :) Sounds like a lot to do and is...but there is nothing like a bad engine to turn a person against boating. If your interested in this engine, invest in a service manual. OEM's are preferred. They give specific info and "how-to's" for your engine. All the above is not as hard as it sounds.

OEM manuals can be ordered through the Ken Cook Co., Marine.com, or the outboard wizard. Just do a search for them....they all have sites.

There are generic manuals available. Check the bottom of this page for "Manuals".

Don't hesitate to post if you have more questions.
