I qam looking at buying a 25 evinrude. It has a long shaft. The guy that owns it is telling me that the engine can be shortened by removing a shaft extension piece. He says the motor has a water tube extension, a shift rod extension, and a shaft extension that can be just removed and put back together. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Also from the picture that was sent to me it looks like the shaft may be 25" with the extension, which would make it 20" after removal. Did evinrude make a 25hp that was 20"?

I would ask him to take it apart and make it a short shaft for you before you purchase it :)

What year is it? Assuming it's the late-60's to early 80's setup with the non-through-the-hub exhaust...

The conversion kit for those motors came with different, longer driveshaft and pickup tube assemblies (not extension pieces) along with the 5" housing extension. To make it a short shaft, you'll need a driveshaft and water tube from a short-shaft motor. You split the LU from the motor, replace the longer shaft & tube with the short ones and reassemble minus the spacer.

Whoops...I forgot about the shift rod. You'll need one of those from a short shaft motor as well. Replacing it will require you to split the LU and install the shift rod from inside the top half of the LU gear case.

It's easy enoug to do if you've got the parts...but I like skidooosl's idear to make him switch it over before ya buy it! :) While it's split, don't forget the water pump impeller...cheap insurance to replace it while you've already got it apart!

The long-shaft 72 Johnson 25 I bought had an extension on the shift rod - the coupler piece between upper and lower parts of the shift rod was long enough to make up the difference.

You're right, the connector block for the shift rod is longer on the long-shaft motors. So the OP will just need the new shaft and water tube and a short shift rod coupler to convert from long to short. My bad.

Not necessarily. If it is a factory long shaft it will have a long shift rod and regular connector. If it is a conversion long shaft it will have the longer connector.

It is a 1988 motor, does that make a difference?

Yes, it certainly does. We are guilty of discussing the wrong motor. The 1988 comes from the factory as either a long or short. You can't convert them without major work and parts.

I wish I had of posted the year from the start. Missed out on a heck of a deal. 25 hp for $300, ran like a top in test tank. idled great, couldn't have asked for a nicer motor. I was going to but it any way but when I called back it was gone.
