When pulling the lower unit how do you disconnect the shift shaft - seems to be connected at the top end and its tight in there - 2003 Mercury 25EL

There's a pin in the top end of the shift linkage. It rolls over and locks on the pivot pin of the shifter. Raise up on the little notch on the shifter roll pin and then you can pull the pin out. It's a bugger but you can do it without removing anything with a long pair of forceps or needle nose pliers........:D

Okay, got it apart and yes taking the starter out first made it much easier. The little washer for the shift shaft was no where to be found. Tell me when you put it back together everything lines up and falls into place ???? Does the water tube stay on the lower unit or the mid section for re-assembly? It came down with the lower unit. Going to get parts this morning.

The washer should have stayed on the shift linkage whe pull it down. If its not there any small washer should do. Take the water inlet tube off lower unit and place it back into the motor. . Now this part will take two people, have on person start putting the lowe unit back up while the other person guids the shifter shaftinto the trim release bracket, once it is in, the other person can slowliy move the shifter forwards or backwards slowly until you can line up the holes to slide the shifter linkage pin back in. once the pin is back in you may have to use a screw driver to slightly pull the shifter pin lock down tab out far enough that the pin can snap back onto it. Hope this helps
