hello all,
was at the river the other day and ripped my skeg and macs river runner right off of my lower unit. no damage to lower unit or anything.
just ripped the skeg off. what do i need to do to get the fixed right. did not find the skeg or macs river runner. will the boat shop just cut one off of a junker and just weld it to mine or what will i have to do to get this right?
thanks, duckslayingpro

My friend broke the skeg on one of his motors and we went to a junk yard, found a matching lower unit, and cut the skeg off of it. Then we welded it to his lower unit. That's the way we do it and it works fine.

Manufacturers do not recommend that you weld a skeg on due to the heat of the weld causing the housing to come out of round. The correct way to do the repair is to replace the housing.

hey Duckslayer, the parent metal of your lower end will determine what kind of welder to use. I think mine is aluminum and would therefore likely be TIGed. Avalon may be right though but if the unit were going to be replaced anyhow maybe the weld job would be alright to try...? Sounds like you run through some dangerous waters. :^

A lot of people have had a weld job and not suffered any ill effects. But, If the housing does come out of round it will tear up all the goodies in the lower unit. Call it a one out of four chance to make it worse if you weld.
