Imleaking oil out of the prop so I investigated and got some fishing line out.

But I think I need to replace the seal (o-ring?)

I can get prop off but I think I need to remove the thrust washer to get to the o ring....how do you do this?

thanks in advance

Generally speaking, fishing line doesn't always ruin the shaft seal. The thrust washer is just setting on a shallow taper, and many new enthusiasts will misjudge leftover 2stroke unburnt fuel/oils draining from the midsection as a broken seal.

If the oil smells like 2stroke exhaust it's probably not the seal.

If it smells exactly like gear oil, proceed.

I just re tighthen the nut on end really tight and it seemed to fix it. At least for now.

I have a 25hp too. It sounds like I'm having the same problem. I winterized it over the weekend (I ran it in a bucket, fogged, and replaced the lower gear oil), and 4 days later, I'm still having oil leaking out of the prop. Could this be the unburnt oil still draining? I ran it for about 15 minutes, and did pull the gas line off, and sprayed the fogging oil into the carb.

It smells more like exhaust, than gear oil.

You may have just identified the fact that you don't have a seal problem after all, like said, oily residue from combustion....it IS wintertime and it is prevalent this time of year, especially with a lot of slow speed operation.

The prop nut tightens the prop against the thrust washer which cannot slide forward because of the taper of the propshaft. If it were to slide forward it would take out your seal in a heartbeat as the washer would be spinning against the fixed seal.

Drain the gear lube,If it's milkey white looking you got a leak and should have the drive pressure tested so you know exactly whats leaking.Your problem sounds more like unburnt fuel and oil.
