Re: 25 johnson slips out of gear

Hi blueman....welcome to the forums....

If the engine rpm goes up and you don't go know where....the prop hub is most likely spun. It can be rehubbed if this is the case.

Pull the prop and look at the rubber area. You may see little balls of rubber or the rubber may have losts of cracks in it.

You can do a test on the prop to determine if the hub is spun. Draw a line with some kind of ink that won't wash off from the rubber hub to the metal part of the prop. Install the prop and after the problem crops up, remove the prop and see if the lines are still even. If not, spun hub.

Keep us posted.

I had the same problem on my 65hp Johnson. The gear select cable was loose and wasn't engaging fully into gear. In turn it would start moving a little bit then slip into neutral. If this is the case with your motor check the cable where it mounts to the motor. If this isn't the case ignore ewhat I say :D

I gotta respectfully disagree with fishhunter.

DON'T ignore what he says. Put it in the back of your think tank. May come in handy some day. :)

I agree with OBJ. Spun prop hub is the place to start, especially if it revs up and you go nowhere. But, good thought, fishunter. Had that happen on an old 67 65 HP merc of mine. Never could keep those darn cables adjusted just right on that motor..
