Re: 25' Luhrs modicication/project

I don't wanna hi jack, but did you inject the honeycomb with composite? Does it have any compressive strength? Can you put a bolt through it?
Zop,Did you read my last post?
When glassed the core gets more or less saturated with the epoxy so its very strong,Bolting through it is a different story. Its not a good core to just bolt onto/into.It does not have that kind of compressive strenght. I posted a thread just to see what ideas people had because there are a few existing ways to bolt onto honeycomb,One is inserting, either wood to create a good core,or injecting a filler,Some people use a proved system involving bolts and washers but then again you need a pretty thick skin...

Pics are a drag man,I dont know what i am doing wrong And I know I am certainly now wiz,But I posted a thread a few days ago with a few pics allmost finished restore with some pics I called it .
I will get a friend of mine over soon to make some pics and put them on iboats.
I did a complete documented restore on my boat but some low lifes decided to break in my house some time ago and steal my laptop so all my pics are gone forever..
Anyway, soon come.

I was unaware that the epoxy penetrated the outer aluminum skin...

How did you assemble yours? Just glass around the corners?

PS did you use 1708 with epoxy?

Re: 25' Luhrs modicication/project

Editted the pics from my previous post to show the boats cockpit, and what a pilot house looks like on another boat.

Mustang - Yea I could wait and find a flybridge, but one advantage is that I can pretty much design the cabin as I see fit and really make it custom. I was thinking of putting the head in the bow area in front of helm, it would make a smaller v berth but I would have a larger cabin area...

I kinda also like the idea of getting in there and really learning the ins and outs of the boat. I like the thoughts of being involved in the design, fabrication of the boat from an asthetic and engineering point of view....

Zopperman - the foam he used is good for a pilot house, but I think I will need a more structural material as I want to be able to stand on the top and add a flybridge. But thanks for the link, very interesting build there. I think he did a good job of fabrication, but asthetically I dont think he pulled it off. But I am sure its functionality is superb. the pilot hose still looks a little odd on the type of boat. Perhaps if he painted better to blend it wouldnt stand out as much.. But who am I to be critical! LOL

For someone who has little boat experience you sure have the right attitude!
And yes foam will not fly for you project,I am not trying to push the honeycomb but it is strong enough to stand on,
Then again wood is easier for bolting onto etc.
As for the asthetics I agree, a good thing to keep in mind when you construct your pilothouse,It is difficult to match nicely with a boat. Keep us posted!!

There's a glitch with the forum software. Click the Go Advance button when posting if you're doing pics and they'll work fine.

Sorry about the hijack and thanx again EZ,still not happy with the pics, the last ones came out small but at least he has an idea now.
I can see also that the pics are distorted and the pilothouse looks kinda roundish ...Anyway this is My Honeycomb pilothouse (almost finished)

Yeah I see 'em but they're super small. I don't personally have much experience with posting pics using the forum software. I always use photobucket.

Mike, real nice looking pilothouse. What size do the sheet come? what is the approx cost per sheet?

Did you use it for the roof? and how did you attach everything? glassed corners?

For your application it looks to be a nice construction method, but for what I want to do, I have doubts to its structural integrity. For your job its more or less an enclosure, for me it would be the entire superstructure of the boat. And since it does not have any compression strength, there's no way to fasten it to the boat other then glassing.I would at least want to have it mechanically fastened to the deck and even have some joists @ the corners. To give you an idea of what I want to do is look at a Ranger tug, or Camano trawler, or an American tug. And yes I know what your going to say, well those are completely different looking boats from a luhrs. And I know, if you want a boat that looks like that why not buy one. Well, I dont have 100k to spend! LOL

Re: 25' Luhrs modicication/project

hey,Jhudds!
Nice to have you back.
To answer your questions...You are more or less right about the structual intgrity..but....(still pushing the nidacore-just kiddin lol) hulls are made out of it, decks, even houses. Most decks of modern day boats are also a honeycomb sandwich core constructions, the bolt everything on there what you can think of by means of taking out the honeycomb like core and reinforcing it by way of some sort of filler...the skin of those decks is really thick though...a lot of glass..anyway I get your drift.
The sheets I got from our budget marine store.I think I paid aprox. $80 bucks for a 4 by 8 panel.
Yes,I used it fot the roof and the stringers.
I attached everything with adhesive filler from west marine.
Yep,glassed the corners after rounding them down.(fiberglass and sharp corners dont mix)
Funny short story; After about a year and a half i was ready to paint the pilothouse.Got paint(2 compound) And primer.
Primed, all well.Went to paint,Paint did not harden...Found out the shop had given me the wrong ratio of mixing....Spend three whole days with a metal scrub and almost three gallons of very painful laquerthinner to get it off again... no joke...
Anyway as we speak I am going through the budget marine catalogue and came across this:plastic wood.
Its a high density polythylene material.
also known as marine tough or king starboard.
It can be routed ,drilled, sawed, stapled, handles like wood.
-price per linear foot starts from:$55 bucks...
also known as "marine tuff"
i am now going to check out the trawlers you mentioned.I believe you to have a good eye for estethics so I have no doubts that your creation will look very nice when done.
regards I mike.

could work but have you thought about the maintenance.... alu is expensive too.
any way jhudds, I checked the tugs and they look hot man, thats one helluva project if you d copied that. Looks like fun though..
How about making a mock up on the p.c and see what she would look like??
I have a question..
What are you planning to targer first? Did you find rot in the boat?

Re: 25' Luhrs modicication/project

No rot. And no pics as of yet. I plan on documenting this via video and pics once the build phase starts.
We are in the initial stages of design. I have taken some measurements and am currently looking at different designs and trying to design up an aesthetic cabin that resembles those trawlers and tugs but works within the lines of the luhrs boat hull and the 25' length.
I will be sketching up some designs over the next few weeks and will submit them for everyone's input. I've decided my 1 year time line was WAYYYYY to aggressive and am leaving this as an open ended project for now.

By the way if anyone is interested in getting themselves a project boat, I seem to have a knack for finding decent cheap or free boats in my size class of boat. in my searches I have been able to find many free hulls and project worthy boats from Luhrs to Pacemaker to silverton. The best online resource is craiglist. Have found many there. Another is visiting local marinas and asking about any abandon boats. Found one marina that had several, but in talking with the owner he said the consensus is that almost every marina that offers dry storage will have at least one or two boats that the owners have abandoned. Getting titles is a little tricky, but can be done.
