Got my new trigger for my '92-25 Merc yesterday.
Went to pull the flywheel. It wouldn't budge.
Tried again this am...still won't budge. I've pulled it off before. It's always been hard, but it always pops off....not this time. My puller is plenty adequate and the nut's plenty loose. I even have nuts attached to the bottom of the puller bolts for fear of stripping the threads in the flywheel. I tried heating it with a torch. Right now I'm trying cooling it with ice to maybe make the metal shrink some....hell....I don't know....I used to pull stubborn bearings off Harleys that way. Is there a chance of warping or otherwise damaging this flywheel if I torque down on the puller too much? This ****-ant 25's killin' me.
Thanks
JD

The only thing you can hurt is the crankshaft. But if you have a puller that is specifically manufactured for your merc, there should be a no problem. The puller has a crankshaft protector on it, right? (A circular piece that fits between the top of the crankshaft and the bottom of the bolt that is being torqued on the puller).

What ever you do, don't bang the outer edges of the flywheel.(I am sure you already no this). And of course don't bank the top of the puller.

My flywheel was a pain in the #$% to get off the other day. I had to a breaker bar and an extension on the hand wrench, with someone else's help. But it popped off, eventually.

Hope this helps-
andy

Thanks Andy, I've tried everything, but to no avail. The puller I'm using is custom made from aircraft grade stuff, and is usually plenty adequate for this job, but for some reason, not today.

I am very interested to see what some of the pros have to say here. I hate stupid things, like the damm flywheel not coming off, that keep you from progessing.

Best of luck-
andy

Eureka. It finally popped off. Doubled the thickness of the plate and bypassed the regulator on the air compressor, i.e. screwed the air line directly into the tank, for a whopping 200 p.s.i.
My neighbor, who's in the Navy and routinely removes propellor hubs, or as he calls them "flywheels from hell" off of E2C Hawkeye aircraft, said he's never seen anything like this.
Anyway, everything under there looks ok and the trigger looks easy to install (knock on wood). Does anybody have a suggestion as to how to make the flywheel easier to remove next time? I used a thin coat of grease on the tapershaft last time. Maybe I should I make sure it's perfectly clean instead? My wife said try using baby powder, but sometimes she's kind of a smart-a*s.

Maybe I'll do that. While I'm at it, I should sink my Ford pickup because according to all the Chevy owners I know, Fords are crap. I gotta get rid of that Harley too. Everybody knows that Hondas are better. Maybe someday I'll get smart and buy the right stuff.

KI. Do not put any lubricant on the shaft, the flywheel needs a metal to metal contact, otherwise it can come loose under power, with serious consequences. Once the problem is fixed then you should'nt need to pull the flywheel again.
Make sure that the flywheel is retorqued to specifications.
As far as Easygo0 is concerned, ignore him, the 25 Merc would be the best 25HP 2 stroke on the market.
If you ever see the crankshaft journels come loose on a 25Yam (I have seen it) then you have problems.

Re: 25 Merc....at my wit's end with this thing...

Thanks whaley, it's all back together now and runs fine. I cleaned the tapershaft and flywheel with Brakleen before reassembling it and torqued it 60 ft.lbs. I don't know what the specs are supposed to be, don't have a book, but that's the standard torque for a bolt that size according to a chart I have. If somebody can tell me the correct torque, I'll gladly re-do it.
As far as Yammys, Chevys, etc. go, all manufacturers make good ones and bad ones. Maybe easygo0 got screwed by a Merc once. I've always had pretty good luck with 'em, since about 1962....even had one save my life. Long story behind that, but since then, I only run Mercs.
