I got another one to add:

Buy all your stereo equipment at once or you'll just end up wasting wire and time... :( off to buy an amp....

Same in CA. If you arrive with the plug in and there is ANY water in the bilge, extra $20 to steam clean your boat/bilge before you launch.

California charging its citizens extra!!!! I'm shocked!

Re: 25 Things I've learned in my first two weeks of boating...

This was my embarrassing learning event yesterday. Though I have several years of experience, I learn something every single time I'm on the water. Long story for any who may be interested.

We get an earlier than average start for the day because rain is likely later- we've been rained on the last 5 outings, and counting... The kids with rabid with anticipation of gong tubing for the first time!!

Dunk the boat in the water -> she won't start:facepalm:. Warning buzzer just gives me one beep- not three or four and the engine won't turn over, no fuel pump pressurizing, no solenoid click. Voltmeter reads about 10!! Battery is dead? That's never happened before. WTF I hit up the guy next in line to launch right next to me for a jump, totally disrupting his launch and departure routine for his families tubing outing. We connect the cables but to no avail- not turning over, no fuel priming noises either, still. Yet when he revs his engine, I can turn it over but no fuel injector priming or ignition- just solitary beeps.

I'm sweating like a pig and confounded as to what's going on. The kids are looking depressed but handling it ok. We're hogging up a double wide launch while people are starting to back up. My boat is completely disheveled with stuff scattered hither and yon after trying to find my jumper cables. I'm dreading the thought of disappointing the kids massively, as well as the daunting task of winch-only loading. I offer profuse thanks to the fellow boater for trying to help me out whilst delaying his outing and send him on his way.

Before throwing in the towel I notice that the dead mans switch-clip is ajar or not fully engaged:facepalm:. Pop it in and we're in business, albeit 20 minutes later. The day was saved!:D The kids never stopped ribbing me yet about not having the MOB switch on my pre-check list! We tubed till their arms fell off!

Lesson learned.

Sounds like you learned two things. Deadman's switch and make sure your battery is charged!

A friend of mine's girlfriends dad (really) owns a boat shop and says about once a month he gets called out to look at a boat that wont start because the safety switch is off. He said he had to start charging for it because he was wasting too much time flipping switches :))

Re: 25 Things I've learned in my first two weeks of boating...

what number are we on now, 27, 28...
I joined the ranks today launching my 83 Larson Nantucket Express (for the first time after purchase, ughhh)
Updated boat launch with steel angled grids which seems like a good ideal (unless u r walking on them water/algae covered)
Well with out any chocks I had no choice due to the angle of the ramp to crank down my emergency brake and VOILA!!! only in Minnysnowta will you have the higher than normal probability of locking up your rear brakes!!!!
I could not get out of the landing. irony of all ironing (LULZ) was at that moment this normally hustling bustling boat landing had zero people zero vehicles nada, nothing!
I only have a "dumb phone" so i called the marine shop 3 miles away and they came and dragged me out of the way (by then someone of course was ready to launch and i was in there way (see pix)
I will add the first pix of my Larson beauty in my original thread about my 470 club experience.

6 hours later my truck/trailer are disabled ( at least I am not taking up 6 trailer spaces) and i backed up the trailer (could go in reverse) to the very corner of the landing parking... gotta get a auto mechanic to come take my flippin wheel/brake apart and free up that bugger:facepalm:

You usually only use a chock when launching, no e-brake? Brave man.

My lesson this past week in a no-crank situation, after checking every starter solenoid, battery, main harness connection, dead man switch, and ignition switch integrity, was:

Make sure the throttle is in neutral.

It was barely a degree engaged in forward gear, so the issue was not obvious, but no crank with key. Second day of a week long lake vacation.

Blood pressure spiked on that one.

Just did the neutral-scare myself. I gassed it into shore and turned the key off in one motion and then it wouldnt start... 10 minutes later, I learned something :)

One forgotten rule......Just because you put the boat in neutral. Does NOT mean it will stop!
A women did this at the ramp in Scugog. And right after she hit the dock (hard) screamed at him "I thought you said it would stop"

I'm sorry for her...After that comment everyone around was laughing their asses off

That was funny!! :D

I only did that once, my very fist time out, as of so far anyways, but.... I do seem to be real good at setting the drain plug on the back of the boat after trailering up and driving off with it still sitting there.
