250 ETecs - 4 Blade Props - Need Advice

I have twin 2007, 250 ETECS that came with three blade, 14 1/4 x 19" SS props. I have since purchased twin Cyclone SS 14 1/4 x 19" four blade props.

These props are part # 177191, 177192 and were manufactured in January 2005. They have rubber hubs.

I have now been advised by my dealer, that these props are an old design that has been discontinued and if I use them on my motors, I will spin the hubs.

I would really appreciate some input on these props - whether it is safe to use them or if I need to purchase another set with different hubs.

Thanks for your input,

Dave

You need another prop dealer. Yes, some of the newer direct injected motors have a very hot exhaust, especially the Yamaha and some E-Tecs. Some 3.0 liter EFI Mercs were bad about it too. There's no reason the rubber hubs won't work. There were, as we understand it, some mods to the cooling passage that cools the prop hub on the E-Tecs. The torque tab just above the prop has a passage in it. I've heard that they opened that up some. Just make sure it's free of obstrictions and check with a dealer or BRP.

You can also make a modification to your prop. We did one today for a Yamaha. Drill a hole in the barrel on the high pressure side of each blade to force water on the hub.

The main reason prop manufacturers went to the replaceable hub system was so they could stock / manufacture one prop and it'd fit all brands with a different kit. Now we'll stock one xxx model prop and use a hub kit for a given brand rather than stock 3 or 4 of the same prop.

Now, xxx engine manufacturer can build a prop that not only fits their motor but fits competetive brand motors too. Availability stays up, inventory level stays low.

Thanks very much for your input. You would not believe how many people I have asked that question of and the responses have been all over the map. But I must say, yours makes the most sense.

You did however, lose me on your explanation of drilling the hole. Do you mean drill it out near where the blade attaches to the barrel and how big should the hole be ? And where in relation to the blade ?

Thanks again. Oh by the way, the dealer was my Hydra Sports dealer, not a prop dealer. No excuse though !!!!

There's a given place on the prop to drill the hole. I'll see about taking a pic tomorrow of the Turbo we did today. The first time you see it, it'll freak you out.

Have you run the props? We might be worring about something that doesn't exist. I would, however ask a good (GOOD) E Tec dealer about the water passage in the torque tab. If it were me I might even be tempted to skip the dealer and call customer service at BRP.

There's a guy who hangs here ocasionally called Seahorse. If you can get his attention he'll know about any service bulletin or update on that passage. If you can't find him here, try Bass Boat Central . com under the Evinrude / Johnson forum.

Personally, the more I think about it the more I'm convinced I'd call BRP if those motors were mine (wish).

Thanks again,

I will call BRP today to see if I can get a definite from them on any issues.

To answer your question, no I have not run the props as I have been told by my local dealer and others that I will spin the props with my motors.

I am getting ready to splash this weekend, so I would like to put this to bed one way or the other.

Re: 250 ETecs - 4 Blade Props - Need Advice

Hi, I just bought a Cyclone 14 1/4 x 19 for my 150 E-tec H.O. From everything I could find out, they were the replacement for the Renegade Offshore. The boat/motor (Blue Wave 190 Deluxe bay boat) is new and I started with a Renegade Bass 13 1/2 x 23. The pitch was too high as I was only turning about 4800, so I contacted DAH propellers. They recommended the Cyclone. These are the guys that customize propellers that competed in the prop shootout at http://www.bwbmag.com/output.cfm?id=1083529. They are alway in the top two or three or so, so I think they know their stuff. He ordered a new Cyclone for me, so it was not just some old stock he had. If your prop dealer says it is old technology, ask him what replaces it? If it is a different brand, maybe there is comission involved.

So they ran the props on your motors? I see. So that's how they know.

Seriously, the HO may indeed create enough heat to burn the hubs but it may not. I'd call BRP and ask about the cooling passage. If there is indeed an advantage to opening it up, it's no big deal.

Ok, so I have installed the four blade props and tested them out. Seems that my WOT has decreased by about 7 mph. and my rpm's have gone up just slightly with the throttles wide open.

Is it possible that I need larger props than the standard three blades that came with the motors ???

I don't know about on a twin engine setup but as I understand it generally top end will be less with a 4 blade prop.Generally 4 blades are for better low end performance and heavy applications.
