250 Mercury problem

Just looking for a little help on an issue that surfaced today. I just finished fishing and fired up my merc 250 to head back to the ramp.... as I was coming out of the hole shot is seems as though the prop was slipping with the rpms going up but the boat was losing speed. I did not hear any grinding or noise coming from the lower unit.

Any ideas on what is wrong? Lower unit or prop hub? Is there a way to tell for sure that it is the hub?

Thanks for any help!

I forgot to mention that I shut the boat down, waited a few minutes and then got it to go up on a plane but could not do more than 28mph without it slipping..... Limped back to the ramp and loaded the boat.

Again thanks!

sounds like your prop hub is slipping. in the center of the prop is a rubber or plastic bushing.older props had rubber bushings that would slip. The newer merc props have a squared off plastic hub inthe center. ck it out or try a spare prop.

Re: 250 Mercury problem

The lake is Westpoint, and I can tell you that there is not underwater vegetation to speak of. The only plant life is brush that is sunk by anglers. There is a lot of underwater structure but no vegetation, trust me. I am from Indiana and it kills me to fish a lake that doesn't have any grass! So with the vegetation ruled out does it sound like a hub slip problem? I am looking for some input before I take it in to the shop. The motor is on an extended warranty so if the lower unit is jacked up that I believe is covered, but I am not sure if the hub is covered if that is the problem.

Thanks again!

Re: 250 Mercury problem

to check hub is easy
i use a grease pencil
make the prop it self with a line
then more a line inside of the hub
take it for quick run and find out if the lines are still lined up

Re: 250 Mercury problem

Thanks, I will try that. Only problem is I won't be able to take it to the lake until next weekend. Till then I am left to worry about a lower unit!

Grass does exist on Westpoint, just got to know where to look. Where did you have to limp from and to where? You can get stranded pretty bad on WP.

remove the plug wires before you put it in forward drive and see if the blade turns and the shaft does not. if so get it rebushed
