Hello everyone! This is my first iBoat forum post!

I have a problem with my Johnson 25hp electric starter.
When I engage the starter, the gear comes upwards and runs, but it's scratching to the flywheels gear, it isn't holding!

I really don't know what the problem is, maybe anyone has an idea??

Re: Johnson Electric start problem

Howdy, KoenBrink.

Welcome to iboats. :)

I think your starter is not getting enough current to make full power. Perhaps you have a battery or wiring problem.

Be sure the battery has a full charge.

Remove, clean and reattach all connections in the battery to engine cables. While you have them off, check each cable for internal corrosion or weak spots.

If this doesn't get you working right, go to the Engine FAQs Forum and do the troubleshooting of the starter circuit in "Outboard won't start".

Let us know what you find, and good luck. :)

Re: Johnson Electric start problem

90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

25hp 1977 Johnson starter prob

Hello everyone! This is my first iBoat forum post!

I have a problem with my Johnson 25hp electric starter.
When I engage the starter, the gear comes upwards and runs, but it's scratching to the flywheels gear, it isn't holding! Metal pieces are flying everywhere!

I know I don't have any battery or wiring problem, I recharged the battery and checked all the wiring.

Does anyone know how to get the starter closer to the flywheel??

You could have a good battery and starter and still have a dirty connection.

You need to actually remove and clean all connections with a peice of sandpaper, just being tight isn't always enough.

If you still have a problem after that repost, and don't put nay grease on the bendix(the part of the started that comes up) it will just attract dirt and make the situation worse.
