25hp & 35hp drive shaft size differences?

Is there a difference in the size of the main drive shafts from a 25HP and a 35 HP evinrude of the same year? In other words can I use a drive shaft from a 35 Hp in a 25hp? I am trying to convert my 25 evinrude back to a short shaft (it had a long shaft kit in stalled by a former owner.) I have found the parts from a short shaft 35HP for a good price.just not sure if it will work.<br />Thanks in advance for any info you can give.<br /><br />Chris

These both '82? If so, they do not swap. The 35hp gearcase is thru-hub exhaust while the 25hp gearcase is not. In other words, they're totally different.<br />Sorry!

The 25 is an 82, i am not sure of the year of the 35hp but the gear case looks almost exactly like the one one my 25. I do know for sure the 35 is not a thru-hub, so maybe it's a bit older. But I thought the model year would be close to the same by the construction of the gear case.

Hmm, this wouldn't be the disassembled one on ebay perhaps? If so, that's a late '50s case and will have really no parts in common with your 25hp.<br />As far as I can find, all the later 35hp engines (76-) had thru-hub exhausts.

On the 82, the driveshaft on the 35 thru-hub and the 25 Hp commercial gearcase is the same, although gearcases are totally different. The 20 HP is different.

Huh. They have different part numbers so I assumed they were different. But then again it wouldn't be unusual for OMC to have two different part numbers for the (functionally) same part.

If the shortshaft 35 HP driveshaft is from a non.thru-hub, it is much older than 82 and will not fit. The 35 thru-hub came out in 76
