25hp evinrude 1971?

I just bought an older 25hp evinrude, and would like to know if I am correct that it is a 1971 model, by the model/serial #'s 25102S-E08612. And is the S in the sequence mean maybe a Sportster model, and if so what does that mean really? Are all service manuals you see listed for mutiple years and sizes ok?

Yes, it's a 1971 Short shaft.

You would be much happier with a factory service manual for that specific model. It gives better instruction, valid pictures and better over all direction regarding procedures for repair/replacement. I have had good luck using a Johnson manual to repair and Evinrude of the same model year. Rick.

Nah, the 25hp motors of that vintage are all "Sportsters", like the 18s are "Fastwins" The S refers to any mid-year changes that were made--if any. Totally un-important unless you are ordering the part involved in the change. Befoe you get all excited about having a "different" model, remember the year always started out with some letter suffix. "S" versions might be the only ones made that year.

I can add that they are very good motors. They are a higher-output version of the older 18. They are light and powerful, and well proven with a long production run on various components (going back to 1957 18s through the 1976 25s). We had a Johnson version of that motor (a '71). It was going strong until it was stolen in 1991 (dad bought a '92 Johnson 30 to replace it). I still have the owner's manual.
