25hp evinrude, will not go in neutral

I have a 1980 something 25hp evinrude. it has the lever on the side where you can go forward, reverse, and neutral. when i am in reverse, and i slide it foward to bring it to neutral, it skips neutral and goes straight to the forward position. it is really tough to move it to begin with. is there something I can loosen to relieve all the pressure so when i try to put it in nuetral it will stay in neutral.

sounds like something is bent and binding. go to BRP-evinrude, literature/engine diagrams, and look up your engine.

Thanks, I had a buddy of mine saying the lobe might be worn down a little where there is not enough gap for the roller thing to fall into for neutral. what do you think?
