I’m thinking of freshening up this 1983 motor. The harness is degraded has bare wires. Was running when parked 20 years ago. May need more parts. It’s going back on the refurbished KingFisher hull. Is this a viable option or upgrade to newer engine?

I would opt for the two stroke if it were me and the 25 hp is worth refurbing

The wiring is really simple on these, not a big deal to fix. If it has good compression and it's cheap I'd take the gamble.
Sitting that long you may have to replace upper and lower crank seals, but that's not hard if it isn't all rusty.
Water pump is a must.

in fact.. all the usual stuff.. compression has suggested, Carbs, try pressure test on the GC, GC water check and new oil ! , reseal GC if need be, , grease all nipples till new grease oozes out , new plugs, etc...including any filters , tank pick-up, new hose maybe and bring a friend and 2 paddles (a small kicker like a 6hp is nice like a 6rxx or small shifting Merc. )

I would apply 2 coats of car wax if it looks decent... if not spray paint helps :) .

Newest " parts " motor I have is a 25 HP 4 stroke.-----Stripped gears and owner gave up on it.-----That old 25 HP 2 stroke is very durable and will live for many years with proper care.

Do a compression check to determine its health and go from there.
Did compression check top cylinder 155 bottom 160. Squirted trans fluid in and turned by hand before jumping starter.

Compression check was 155 and 160 here are some pics of the engine. Thank you for the advice.

That is a false reading, they came factory with around 130psi. Let it sit overnite and re-do the compression test.

You will want to check your tester....they didn't leave the factory that hi.

Edited.

I just redid a Johnson 35....

Cut some wire off an old harness for the proper color wires and rewired the powerhead pretty quick. 3 hours or so.

Your gauge is probably good. You can't put oil in the cylinders then do a compression test. Wait a day for the oil to settle and re do the compression test.

Agreed ,----compression readings are a bit high.-----Mice got in there and chewed it up.----Wiring repairs are easy for some folks.----But it is proven time and again on here that it is a challenge for some.

I think the point was the oil will raise the compression numbers a bit. I wouldn’t sweat it the number are close and not low.
Get it going and after running it a few times check the compression again so you have numbers for future reference.

No you need to redo the compression test. the excess oil can make bad compression seem good.

Ok I have this engine starting good and runs but quits after a few minutes. Overhauled water pump, fuel pump, and carburetor also new hose tank to engine.

Simplest thing to check when an engine runs for a bit then dies is the fuel pump.
Squeeze the fuel ball to keep the carburetor filled, if it doesn't die you probably have a fuel pump issue.

Also you can disconnect the fuel line from the carburetor and crank the engine over, you should get healthy squirts of fuel out of the line every time a piston goes up, if you don't it further confirms a fuel issue.

If fuel pump was rebuilt and working properly check to be sure the tank vent is working properly as well.
