25hp japanese mariner shift linkage

i have a 84' 25hp mariner and i was putting in a new water pump and the whole shift linkage came out . im not sure how to fix to make it work again. before i tried to do the work on my own , everything was in excellent working order include the shift linkage. i need help i new at this, but i very mechanicaly incline

I have a 83 25 hp Yamaha made Mariner. I don't really know that much about the working of the linkages but I can email you pictures. Did it pull out of the lower unit or the power head?

i wish, it pull the whole linkage from the top some where near the actuall shift lever. not sure how to take engine out too see where to re connect the linkage. any answers would be greatly appr.
