Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

A solid click sound from the solenoid is a good sign
Not necessarily as it could be corroded internally and not passing voltage out to starter terminal. A meter/test light attached to starter side of solenoid will tell if its passing any voltage.

Agreed, but your earlier post was related to the sound a solenoid makes. In any case, sounds like he has other issues to figure out.

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

with pull start..did you have the ignition switch in the "on" position?..any spark at the plugs?

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

Okay, tried the last test with jumper wire from the battery to the solenoid terminal and getting a click so i think the solenoid is good. Sounds like it's down to the ignition switch or wiring and hope it's just the switch. But, i don't have any voltage when turning ignition switch at the starter terminal on the solenoid. So, what's the vote...ignition switch or solenoid?

When you jumpered the switch, the starter should have cranked as well. It doesn't sound like that happened?
Else, I would verify you're getting 12 volts to the starter.

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

Hard to say....my 72 Johnny 25 will run without any of the electric start stuff connected (pull started of course).
Your electrics are probably different though...

These guys will get you going...faztbullet has a point....just cause it clicks, doesn't mean it's good.

I'd be more concerned on getting it running via pull start first, then fix the electrics.
Isn't there a little ground wire that attaches somewhere around the bottom of the carb?

No. It did NOT crank...it just made the solenoid click. I'm not getting any voltage at the solenoid ignition terminal or the starter terminal at all when turning the ignition switch. I know I'm getting 12.6 volts going into the solenoid though. Also, this is a 1969 25HP Johnson not 1978 as I first mentioned.

run a jumper cable from the POS battery to the bolt connection on the starter, not the solonoid, to verify that your starter works. It may be hanging.

Also pliers tighten your battery NEG. Source of 63% of boat problems.

OK OK i made up the 63%. But it's a lot

Okay, so i checked voltage out of the ignition switch and one of the four terminals has 12.5 volts. No voltage on solenoid at ignition terminal and none at the starter terminal. Jumper from battery directly to starter cranks motor. But, when i run jumper from the battery tothe solenoid ignition switch terminal the solenoid just clicks...does NOT crank motor. When i run jumper from battery to solenoid starter terminal i get absolutely nothing...no click, no crank. I do have 12.5 volts at solenoid incoming power terminal.

Regarding the pull start, i have spark at both plugs when pulled and the electric rewind for the pull rope works with the ignition key turned to on.

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

69 and 78 ignition systems are very different species...if your spark will jump 1/4" or greater air gap, then you need enough compression and fuel and all happening at the right time and the motor will run....since the motor ran well a few months ago before storage, I'd try spraying some fuel fix in the carb throat to start it....the rewind for the rope is spring driven not electric

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

the fact that it works directly to the starter and not to the starter side of the solonoid, is the connections between the starter and solonoid and even the cable itself. take them off, sand until shiny and tighten. Test that cable.
Check (disconnect clean and reconnect) the solonoid ground to the block, too.

I am assuming you already replaced the solonoid. And remember, sometimes new parts come defective. BTDT.

rewind for the rope is definitely electric with ignition key turned to "ON" position. It takes about 10 seconds for it to rewind and makes a noise at it rewinds. With key in "OFF" postion, it does only use the spring and rewinds immediately after pulling.

I have replaced NO parts at this point. But, with the latest test i think i've narrowed it down to the solenoid. 12.5V at terminal on power IN side of solenoid, no voltage at ignition side of solenoid while turning the ingition key and no voltage at terminal on power OUT side of solenoid going to the starter.

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

does the starter gear engage the ring gear on the flywheel when the ignition is in the "on" position?..puzzled as to why the manual starter would be any different with the ignition on or off?

Try and get some pics of this motor up!
I've never heard of electric rewind for the pullstart.....weird.

Well, Got her running with the pull start. Smoked a lot at first, but the fuel tank was almost empty and had too much oil in it. Filled the tank with 50:1 mix and after it burned the excess oil, it ran like normal with just a little smoke.

Still waiting on the solenoid and ignition switch to come in at the parts store to get the electric start going.

Glad to hear. What was the problem, or was it just the fuel mix?

Re: 25HP Johnson Ignition

Started to take the carb off to clean it out since it sat for 2 years and the neighbor came over and offered some carb cleaner before going into the trouble of taking it apart...low and behold after about 4 squirts of cleaner and pulls it fired up.

Still waiting for electric parts.
