Re: '75 Evinrude 25hp. (w/tiller steering)
I just replaced the clutch dog (and remachined the forward gear to eliminate the wear) and it's still jumping out of gear.
It seems like the shift lever feels more positive when shifting into reverse than when shifting into forward. Is there any adjustment of the shift lever/rod that could be adjusted for a more positive forward engagement? When the shift lever is put into neutral (the middle scalloped position under the lever) it is sometimes still in gear.
On the new clutch dog one side was marked with a small groove on the outside of the engagement fingers and I put that side towards the forward gear. Is that the correct way to install?

Thanks in advance for any help/info.

I don't know about your engine, but on my earlier Johnson there is a means to adjust the shift lever/rod. Behind it is a sort of crescent piece (the parts drawing calls it an "adjusting lever and shaft assembly"), in which is a slot that a pinch bolt passes through, by slackening the bolt you can bias the movement of the shift rod up or down.

I have a '78 15Hp and there's a spec of 5/16" to 11/32" from the top of the lower unit housing to the top of the brass shift rod connecter. I don't know if this helps or not.
