Spoken like a true hack.

It fixes nothing, only covers up the problem so you don't notice it.

Removing the thermostat only makes the water flow faster past the sending unit. The back cylinders can actually be overheating because the water isn't there long enough to absorb the heat from the cylinder.

So then why do we find a good bit of salt water boats running without thermostats? Just curious.

People not wanting to fix things right, or not knowing any better. Then there are others out there falsely telling people that it's ok to remove the thermostats and run that way.

Because they're idiots who don't know what they are doing!

Without a thermostat the engine can NEVER get warm enough, the oil doesn't reach optimum temperature and neither do the cylinder bores and pistons. This creates, among other things, much more wear in the engine. Contaminants in the oil don't boil off, and the oil becomes acidic. If the engine is EFI/MPI then the ECU continually runs the engine rich as it thinks it's still too cold... More fuel, more wear...

If the engine gets too warm with the thermostat in, then there is a problem to be fixed, not masked by removing the thermostat, or drilling holes in it!!

Let's look at what we have established is good and working properly...

Drive water pump and associated plumbing. Elbows are clear and free flowing, as are manifolds. Thermostat is new (and tested in a pan of boiling water and a thermometer I hope)... Check balls and springs in the t-stat housing are new/working properly... Here's an idea, put a section of clear hose over the balls and you should be able to see them working.... Another idea is to remove the hoses from the elbows (last place the water runs) and check you have the right volume coming out of the engine. We have established the volume going in is right, if there's not the same coming out then that would indicate a blockage somewhere. It would then be a matter of checking the flow at various points to narrow down where said blockage might be...

Another option is to rig up a pressure gauge in the water line from the drive and see what the pressure's doing when hooked to the engine... If it's too high, a blockage somewhere....

Other than this boat my experience has been limited to cars (I've got a 68 Olds 442 that I restored myself over 8 years) I've always been told that running with a thermostat isn't going to help solve an overheating problem, that's why I posted:

Running without a thermostat masks a problem. The engine is still running hot there's just a greater volume of water passing through resulting in a lower temperature.

Right now there really isn't a lot more I can do with it out of the water that I can't do once it's in the water. I'm lucky in that my boat is 400 feet away from my house and not trailered or at a marina. I'm going to get it cleaned up and put it in the water so I can run it under load and see what happens. I don't want to chase anything else if adequate water delivery at 3000 rpms isn't possible with a hose. It will be a week or two until I get it in. I'll report back what happens then.

Thanks for everyone's help. I was looking for opinions and got plenty.

I hate it when people start threads and you never find out if they resolved the problem so here goes:

I put the boat in yesterday and had no overheating issues. The temperature gauge was in the same location as when I was running it on the muffs. The IR thermometer reads right around 160 on both the port and starboard sides of the intake manifold when underway at 3000 rpms. I can only guess that it was starving for water on the muffs at 3000 rpms in the driveway. I think that there never really was a problem I think the sender is probably not working the same as it was previously and I'll eventually change it out

Thanks for all the responses
