This should be a simple one for those that have just serviced their 270 leg....
Does the plug on the bottom seal with an o ring or a copper washer ?

If still all original from new then it seems this would depend on your drive serial number.
What year is your boat/stern drive?
Have a photo of your plug? What was/is on there now?
I recall our 1982 AQ125 engine / 270 drive used the O-ring.

Wow you went above and beyond helping out ,thanks for the info. will have to check those SN. It is a 84 with AQ 125. I placed a copper washer under it and its been leaking ,might have been the wrong size.

It's not a copper washer, it's a gasket. Just like some models with the dipstick. Some have an o-ring and others have the gasket. The gasket is shaped like a washer, but it's not copper. FWIW, when I order parts, try to throw in some extra o-rings, gaskets, fuel line crush washers, and other small spares so the shipping cost is spread out. I like to have all the o-rings on hand for an upper drive gearbox removal on hand and plenty of spares for the drain and dipstick.

This is the plug in the above picture. when I looked up into the hole it looks like a white plastic teflon insert inside ,could this be the seal.
I tried to look up those part numbers listed above ,but it does not let me in,sounds like i have to be a dealer .

Link works for me. Don't know about the teflon washer but the gaskets and o-ring do work. Might try a local hardware or auto parts store for an o-ring and see if it worls .

I took the cooper washer out and just screwed it in .24 hrs later and no leak yet.
I may hole punch some gasket material and try that as it did not look like the hole is beveled to receive a o ring.

If you want to be done with it, just do your pressure test from the top instead of the bottom. Threads are the same for the dipstick and drain plug, so just hook it up on top.

Get the proper Volvo o-ring or gasket based on your serial number. Don't do a home made hack on an expensive outdrive.

Buy extras and always change them every time you change your gear oil.

I work at Cummins , always have plenty of washer gaskets and o rings left over when over hauling a 50 Litre engine.
Can not enter the above site as I live outside of the USA.
Will make it work .
Thanks for all the help .
