In addition to Patinldaho's observations which I have found to be true, I might add:
I have a 250 for my V8. I'm guessing my drive is from the late 70's. I bought another 250 for a spare but it's for a 4 cylinder so the lower 3rd of that drive (blue bottom) won't work.

Then I bought a 280 from a V8 as a spare and it looks like it will bolt right up (both the 250 and 280 drives have the single helmet bolt). Worst case, if the spare is the same ratio, you can use parts of it if you need them.
One thing I did notice is that the 280 takes a flapper in the bellows instead of the external flapper on my 250 (270'smay also have a flapper at the exhaust outlet). Lastly, unless your 270 prop shaft is tapped, you'll need a slightly different propeller mounting technique including a 280 line cutter and a cone bolt.

The stand below was modified (made longer to take 2 drives) but here are the dimensions for the single.

So now I've got all these spare parts (including a set of 6 cyl gears) which I've laid out $200 total for, and find these drives are pretty much bullet proof.
Bottom line - the spare drive @ $100 will give you peace of mind, but you'll probably never need it.
