I'm confused.

Cosworth? Since when did Cosworth make an outboard?

275 vs 280 hp?

Well, I'll put it back, but someone needs to explain this terminology to me.

No, this is an outboard. These 3.4 liter outboards had a nikasil bored engine block made by cosworth, the racing engine guys!! They were available in 275hp and 300 hp versions. They were a high torque engine that was designed to work not to race. They had a unique lower unit that would not interchange like most other v6 mercs. The units were tough, but not speed demons for their power. The 280 hp you are talking about is a 2.5l efi merc performance product. It is a much faster unit, but at a cost of durability over the 3.4l motors. Parts for these are becoming scarce. Even the water pump housings have been discontinued!!
