Picked up a 1964 28 hp Evinrude with a floppy mag plate. I have a 62 40 hp Gale or a 57 Javelin for parts motors. Will either of these plates work on the newer engine?

The '57 is iffy. They changed the flywheel and armature plate sometime back then. Similar, but the newer style armature plate has a groove cut around the outer edge that the flywheel runs in. It is a firestop seal.

Also, the '57 won't have a hole for the upper cylinder kill wire grommet. But you can drill one.

You didn't post any model numbers, but by doing a quick check, the 62 40hp uses the same mag plate, PN 580332. The 57 does not.

The fact that it does not have the hole for the kill wire is enough to give it a different part number. So it still boils down to the firestop groove. Personally I don't think it has but not positive about that.

Always an education on this great site! Its the first time that I have heard about the firestop groove. Really enjoy these old outboards and tinker with them as a hobby all summer long. In the winter its vintage snowmobiles. Thanks fellows for your insights.
