done a lot of work on it so far and cant seem to nail the problem, It seems as when I put it in gear and go to accelerate it runs out of gas and cuts out

Re: 28 johnson wont accelerate

David, and i have been working on this motor for a week. was out of time, and linc n sinc, carbs have been gone thru several times. but the high speed jet is buggered and can not get out, all passages are clear. pull head, all looked good, not excessive play, no scoring. compression was 90 & 80, now 125 each. great spark, new fuel pump, will idle beautifully, but will not accelerate in gear, acts like it is either running out of fuel, or flooding out. i will idle for about 3-4 minutes, and then quit like it is out of fuel in the bowl, pump the bulb and it starts right up. pulled fuel line of fuel pump, and pump is pumping as it should.

really need ideas. going to try different thank and hose tomorrow.

When it quits, did you try spraying premix down the carb throat?

When it quits do you check for spark again? Maybe a heated up coil intermittently firing?

coils brand new, no problem with spark.

Short in the wiring when shifting? rectifier? When it dies at idle, pumping up gets it to start again.. Flooding or starved? Choke solenoid good? Float sticking? Pumps gas when running, or when you pump the bulb? Good plugs? Air leak in manifold or bypass cover.

1. What model is it?
2. One or two carbs?
3. What happens if the bulb is pumped while trying to accellerate?
4. Is the stator free turning or might it be lagging the throttle?
5. Is there a neutral throttle stop to prevent WOT in neutral, and is it working properly, ie: not locking throttle out in gear?

Seems to me that high speed jet must be serviced, one way or another.

sorry it is a 1988,
one carb,
pumping bulb does not help.
stator turning freely.
no neutral stop, remote control motor.

high speed jet is my last thought. wonder if i can use an easy out to get it out, and a new jet.

Well, that HS jet is a prime suspect in the symptom of refusing to accellerate, but wouldn't explain the stall after idling.

It does sound like inadequate fuel and the carb bowl going dry. Did you examine the inlet needle seat for possible restriction of flow into the bowl? I once had a shaving off the plastic fitting on the fuel pump jam the needle so that it didn't let enough fuel flow into the bowl. That was a stinker that it was very satisfying to find.

Re: 28 johnson wont accelerate

tried it out today with my buddys tank and line did the same thing, just for the hell of it i tried puttin it in wide open as soon as i put it in gear and ran about a quarter mile down and back with no problem brought it back to idle and it died about two minutes into it. started it back up and tried in idle again and just kept adjusting the throtle by the sound and it made it back to the ramp. I sat at the ramp for another couple of minutes out of gear and it died again same way like it ran out of gas.

When it dies, pull the plugs and see if they are wet or dry. Do you have your idle adjusted too low?

idle is actually on the high side.

Is it sneezing just before it dies? I'm wondering if it has something to do with the choke.

Sounds like a fuel pump issue to me. Do you have a fuel pressure gage? Handy gadget to own.
