How much should I expect to pay for dry ice or soda blasting?

ACX or Arauco grade plywood sealed in 3 coats of epoxy resin would be just fine.

For the aft deck, I'm thinking about using Medium Density Overlay (MDO) boards, plus 3 coats of epoxy. Those boards are water proof. They are used to make street signs. No checking. You can not find them at Home Depot. I'm looking for them in South Florida.

Just my take on MDO

I used to use a lot of MDO in the sign business on Bill Boards in the early 90's. I would call it water resistant at best. we would get swelling around each of the fasteners over time. Eventually the wood would break down and fail. usually not a problem with a sign that is repainted once a year, because it was not a big deal to swap out the panel. However I would hesitate to use it in a structural application like an aft deck. I would rely more on the strength of real wood fibers in the ACX or Arauco plywood more than I would with sawdust and glue and I would seal with CSM and resin

your going to have to call around for soda blasting or dry ice blasting in Florida. I could point you to a few places in WI.

MDO is not manufactured from sawdust and glue. MDF is!!! MDO is made just like the Arauco Plywood (you will see this in the attached PDF) using individual laminates of plywood and 100% waterproof glue. Main difference is the final layer of High Pressure resin coating. As with any plywood, anytime you penetrate the wood it should always be coated with resin as should the mechanical fastener to ensure proper sealing of the wood. Do this and it will last for decades.

you are correct WOG on MFO. Now I am trying to figure out the paper backed MDF stuff we used at the sign company 22 years ago. I remember it being labeled as water proof and coming apart after a year in the weather. the fasteners were all brushed over with some sort of sealer prior to the signs being painted with one-shot

I believe there is a group of ex Marinette people rehabbing the boats. They have a listing of these boats for sale on the www. I haven't researched them much but here is a link you might try info@marinette.com or 906 228 2840 There web page is headed "Factory Reconditioned Boats now Available from Marinette Yachts" I think they may sell replacement rear decking.

HomeDepot here will special order MDO, they were a little cheaper then another lumber yard, but 20min further away. So I bought it closer to home.

I looked into ice blasting. It was expensive. You can get away with media blasting (glass bead) but that is not cheap either. If you're very carful, you can rent (or buy) an inexpensive blaster and do it yourself. However, you have to be very careful about working the metal too much with sand.

Speaking from experience,it is not difficult to take the boat off the trailer in the yard or driveway. I did it with a 28 Marinette in May of this year. The process is fairly straightforward. I used six cut up rail road ties for supports and a 20 ton bottle jack. The wife was very excited in a negative way to come home and find me under the boat off the trailer. However, she is very happy with the results. If needed, you could put four concrete footers in the yard to hold the boat. My uncle did it for a 28' Whaler. Three feet of tube form in the ground filled with concrete and you're off and running.

Check out www.marinetteboat.net/forum/ for some ideas. You will also find www.metalboatsociety.org helpful as well.

Do your homework on the aft deck. Ours is in need of replacement. I'm considering aluminum plate or marine plywood. Either would be coated with epoxy and non-skid. I am staying away from non-marine materials.

Your Marinette is 5086 as that was what Aluminum Cruisers used for skin and even though you use 5083 I am sticking with 5086 as it is an exact match and mine will be used in mostly salt water. I look forward to seeing you get her up and running. These boats are incredible.

WZ - The project was too big for my capabilities. I gave up. i'm currently working on a 1991 Starcraft Islander 22 and a 1986 Sylvan Offshore 22. I'm subscribed to your Marinette project. I know you're hurt. I feel for you. Must be tough to look at project with weather improving and not being able to work on it. More time for research, planing and organization. I'll be watching.
