I have a 1988 28 evinrude spl and this summer it always had problems starting but not very serious. I got my carb cleaned them after that i drove it home on like zero gas. and when i got to the dock i left it there, it was a sunday until i took my bros full gas tank and it wouldnt start until i cranked it over forever. And I drained the bowl, and **** tested the gas, no water in it. It wouldnt start with starting fluid. Then sense then it never started unless I let it sit without being cranked for a week. I put a new cdi unit on it but that but didnt do much. then it randomly started after i reconnected the cdi plug. after that it didnt work But sense then i took it out of the water and i am just wondering what it could have been. So any insight would be good.

Re: 28 spl

Detail the procedure you use to start it.

When was the last time you changed the spark plugs?

Re: 28 spl

All I did was was turn the key I never pushed in on it. And I would always crank it over and then when it would start it would stutter out and thats when i did the high idle. I changed the spark plugs the day it wouldn't start. The gas/air ratio never really worked when it started up even if i changed it, it would always like die out. But the compression was 110 in each cyl and I even put my hand over the carb the see if that would choke it, if my choke didnt work, but that never happened. I tried starting fluid that didn't work. And after the boat would sit for like a week at the dock it would start, only for a day, and by that time it was all grassed up so it didn't go fast. I think it is something electrical, unless the dude who cleaned my carb did some thing.

I would really like an answer on this one.

You gotta push the key in to activate the primer. Push, turn and start. I keep pushing in until the motor bogs down a bit, then release. If it starts to die out, push it in again. Repeat until warmed up...

its not because it was cold. trust me i tried everything in the world to so with the primer and stuff but what would be something electrical that would not work.

Re: 28 spl

You mentioned plugging/unplugging the power pack. Did you actually check for spark or simply try starting it? Might be as easy as a bad ground on the pack...

I figured I dont need to check for spark if it started up sometimes. The motor wouldn't start before I replaced the power pack. But it ran after if I let it sit for like a week. With the old cdi. Then it did the same thing with the new power pack.

He would have taken it apart and reassembled it. More than likely he also readjusted it as well. Most outboards need to be primed to start, but some are adjusted so well that they don't need priming. The right procedure is to prime the primer bulb, set the throttle to about 1/8 throttle, push in the key and crank until it starts. Sometimes a couple more jabs with the primer will be necessary to keep it running.

You need to get a spark checker and check the quality of the spark as you crank it, you should get a nice strong blue arc at abot a 3/8 inch gap. if you have no spark, it could be things like a key switch or lanyard switchg going bad.

The other thing is that you should not use starter fluid in a 2 stroke. As it provides no lubrication in the engine and actually washes away the oil that is in there. The use of a pre mix bottle of 50:1 gas n oil is much better.
