28hp envinrude spl 1986 waterpump

I'm new to the world of outboard motors. I picked up this motor and I would like to change the water pump. I picked up the parts (Evinrude water pump kit 0395270)and wanted to know if this is something I can do myself? I'm pretty good with the tools but was confused by some of the parts in the kit. One part (that I cant find on the instructions they sent with the parts) looks like a small plastic chip 1/8"thick x 3/8" long x 3/8"wide. It's flat on one side and curved on the other. Also I'm not sure how to disconnect the shift linkage after I remove the lower unit bolts.

They also sent two O rings?

it has the old style shift rod, there is a 1" x 3" plate with 2 screws on the side of the leg, remove plate, then remove the bottom screw on the connector, when putting back together needle nose pliers helps, align the rod, there is an indentation it the rod, that the screw has to go thru. it is a simple job. just be sure not to pinch the grommet when realigning the water tube, it will block the flow of water.
