Re: 29' Carter Safari

Hey Matt, below is the email address for greg Hornby. He is the guy that had the safari web site. They where going to start charging him or something is why he had to close it.
safariboats@yahoo.com

I have not had a chance to keep up with things here. After my company I worked for closed down, I scrambled to put my own mechanics truck together. and have been chasing what work I can find. I am not breaking any records for work, but have started to build a client base. I purchased a 1989 peterbilt 379 truck and another older mechanics truck and took the bed off and put on the pete. I mostly repair larger heavy equipment, such as scraper, loader, dozers that sort of thing. but have been doing truck's and trailer's also. I will try and get a picture of my truck loaded. the rain is messing with my connection so may not be right now.

That is just to cool. I actually have the original launching instructions and many other papers for some of the appliances in the boat. They where still in it when I purchased it so I put everything in a three ring binder with my all the documents for the coast guard. Keep up the good work Matt. yak at ya latter Kody

Hey, when you kids get done i need you to sail to L.A and fix this thing for me for a documentary I'm producing about getting suckers to finish up your projects for free. In an ecologically sound manner. Mostly. And there's chicks. Lots of chicks. I like that the opening page of the Carter brochure has a sweet boat ripping around with chicks on the roof. It seems to me like Carter is a company with their priorities in order.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/lac/boa/1570725656.html

Two of my friends who work outside Home Depot are destined to Polish the 28 foot Reinell i bought for $724 last week to a gleaming lusture, and hopefully overhaul and replace the ancient Windsor that's in her tomorrow. Then, when I sell her to a bigger sucker than me for a tidy profit tomorrow afternoon, I'm off to Riverside to lowball the heck out of the fishing boat guy and hopefully have a newer, closer to done vessel in the yard by sun up.

How soon are you able to get working? The models and us are going to need to be surfing and diving the channel islands by south swell time, so I'd appreciate it if the lollygagging and tomfoolery was kept to a minimum.

Hey hanegard, you mentioned a ford f600 below is a picture of the one I fixed up to pull my boat with. We were trying to do two projects at a time with a deadline. we did get them done I think I have a picture of them hooked together. We also took the truck to Texas and pulled the houseboat we bought on ebay home with the truck. I have added air conditioning and carpeting, but still need to finish the interior (seats recovered and headliner).

Hey Gypseysoul, that is one bitchen truck for boat hauling. I borrow John Carter's (used to be) old 81 GMC 1 ton when I need to get down to the launch ramp.
Well took the Stbd drive boot off the Sea Hawk today I definitely have an upper drive seal leak it was full of white goop. Surprisingly both boots are in pretty good shape for being 15years or more old. Larry our instructor who has been working on these Volvos for 30 years told me to pull the cooling water elbow where it enters the drive sure enough it was eroded. I plan on replacing all the rubber hoses, bellows upper & lower drive seals while I have it apart. The upper drive assembly came off with a lot of effort the forward studs were corroded to the aluminum housing but using the forward stud nuts I were able to jack it free definitely going to use more anti-seeze when it goes back together. Start on the upper Port drive ,where I think the vibration was when it ran last, tomorrow. Will try to get some photos posted soon.

if I didn't go with my LeSabre I had the idea of getting a 24' or so box truck on the cheap, taking the box and most the leaf springs off (yay more garage space!) and building bunks on the frame and simply carrying the Capri on the truck  Then I could easily tow the Jet Skis too

Yeah, the idea that my grandfathers trucks would be cool to restore came from those pictures ;)

His F600 is a '70 I believe. It's a FE 361 V8, it's amazing that with the right gearing his 360 cubic inch engine can do things my 466 cubic inch truck couldn't ;)

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Sea Hawk saga continues. After spending the afternoon trying to remove the 4 bolts holding the upper horizontal shaft pinion bearing housing on the Stbd side we finally went to an acetylene torch and removed 3 of 4. The allen head started rounding off on the last one so letting it soak over night in ATF. The really bad news was realizing the Port side has a bad gimbal bearing so it is a major tear down. Good news the both upper drives look good except for the Stbd seal, the Port universals look brand new. I think I have attached 3 photos 1 is Sea Hawks current berth wouldn't everyone like to have a place like this to work. 2 is the Stbd drive upper housing removed with some of the goop still there 3 is the Port upper drive removed looking at the gimbal housing lots of muck in there.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

those looks way to familiar, except yours look a lot cleaner then when we started ours.... our legs were mechanically in great shape. we had to replace the steering forks and helmets(FUN!!!) and for good maintainance we did the seals well we were painting. got the full steering stem seal kit, as well as the nessicary seals for the 3 sections of the leg. We were ready to replace the gimbal bearings aswell, but its turns out that ours are in great shape and no need to replace.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

well some productive work today, fired up the Port engine for the first time is a long time. After we fixed afew bad connections it fired up pretty easily. But we had no auxillary water pump action(no water comming out exhaust) so im thinking new impeller time.....

Matt, or anyone who knows,
I think you repowered your safari. I am thinking about doing the same. I currently have a chevy 307 volvo penta w/280 outdrive. will a LONGBLOCK ENGINE GM---MERCRUSER 5.7L ENGINE 270HP/350 work?

Also, The port motor is right hand rotation?
Thanks.

Re: 29' Carter Safari

you bought it? what boat number is it(middle digit on black plate)? name of boat? odds are i already have pictures of it somewhere... lol

yes we repowered ours with mercruiser 350 longblocks, any V8 gas engine will fit without mods. make sure you keep your bell housing, starter, and flywheel if the engine came from an inboard application(like ours did). We had the old starters rebuilt and had to use our old flywheels and pressure plates, the bell housings fit becuase they were universal for our particular engines... but not all are.

wiring will not be plug and play, but marine engines are pretty simple. i can make a marine engine run in 5 min from no wires...

i cant remember now what rotation was on which side, i did figure it out when we installed ours, im pretty sure port is Standard rotation... but do a search on that one before dropping them in... :p

Re: 29' Carter Safari

Well, i got the bad manifold off the starboard engine, and started to assemble the new manifold that we got awhile back thats been sitting in the garage. It was a relief to see the light brown water tracks inside the exhaust ports of the manifold , this confirms that its not a head gasket and mostly likely the manifold or the riser(hopefully not we dont have a spare riser kicking around)

Tomorrow i might get the new manifold on the boat and try to fire up the starboard engine.

The port engine definatly has a bad impeller, i fired it up again today and ran afew tests on the pump, and it has 0 suction..
