290 pivot pin (suspension dowel) seems loose

Hi all I have my drive and transom plate off the boat. I'm going over things to replace. My question is one of the pivot pins that hold the drive to the suspension fork seems too loose. Im talking about the short fat stainless dowel that's locked to the transom plate with a stainless Allen bolt. Even with the Allen bolt tightened all the way it still wiggles abit up n down fore n aft. The is no replacement bushing into the transom plate which is odd. How much play is acceptable? The manual says nothing on the amount of play being acceptable.

Oops I meant the pins that hold the drive to the transom plate... Not suspension fork. I'll get some pics when I get home

if your refering to the two pins (one on each side) there should be no play.

I think he's talking about the big pin on the top of the fork that has those two pins on the side. Eh, most of them have a little play.

IMG_0991.jpg here is the part im referring to. One defanetly has more play than the other ~3/32" up n down total travel is that still acceptable? I'm surprised volvo never put bushings in the transom plate so its stainless steel rubbing on aluminum...

Re: 290 pivot pin (suspension dowel) seems loose

there should be nearly 0 movement. those pins should be a press fit into the transom plateas they require a slide-hammer to remove (or a puller). does the pin fit tightly into the H-frame? is it just loose in the transom plate?

volvo never put bushings in the transom plate because its a recreational boat, and like your car, has a 5-10 year life expectancy. Adding bushings, etc would cost much more money. people buying boats generally look for the cheapest cost.

Re: 290 pivot pin (suspension dowel) seems loose

Here's what likely happened.

Average Joe Do-it-Your-Selfer attempted to remove the hinge pins without knowing what he was doing. (Not saying that's you)
These are rather SS soft pins, and he very likely drove on them with a carbon steel drift punch, and he expanded the pins some. When he finally got the pins out, aluminum material from the transom shield pin bosses was compromised.... and he was left with an over-sized pin bore.
Always use heat to gentle expand the aluminum pin bosses (prior to driving on them), and use nothing harder than an Italian Bread Stick as your drift punch. (I.E., a brass or aluminum punch only)
If the play is not excessive, just run it.
If the play is excessive, and if you can't live it, there is a fix.

Contact a good machinist, and have him ream the pin bosses out to a standard ID.
Then have him turn two new "stepped" SS hinge pins for you.
The OD at the inner side of the SS hinge pin (for the suspension fork bushing side) will remain OEM.
The OD at the outer side of the SS hinge pin (for the shield pin boss side) will now be enlarged some, and you'll have a nice tight fit at this side.
However, you'll have two b%$#%d children.... of which should not be a deal breaker, IMO.
BTW, the keeper bolts do nothing more than prevent the hinge pins from sliding either way, and/or from rotating.
They simply fit into the radius'd notch, and have ZERO affect on the tightness of the pin fit.

The pins slid out very easily no use of a punch or anything. Sucks it's like one thing after another when you start digging into things... Joys of old boat ownership lol

Should slide out easily if greased and clean.

They fit fine in the h frame but those have plastic bushings which I'm going to replace anyways. Now to find a machine shop...

An alternative would be thin sleeve bushings and new stock pins. I would use aluminum bronze or nickle aluminum bronze. then you are only opening the holes and bushing them
