Have a toro 5 HP mower. Starts fine, then quits after about 3 to 5 seconds. Acts like the safety is kicking in - like when you hit something (I guess you know by now that I've hit stuff before) heehe. Anyway, it is 14 years old, so don't know how much life is left in it. Probably has 250 plus hours.

Thanks for any comments.

Jeff

Sounds like a fuel flow problem. Could have a piece of grit in yoor carb. Carb kit for that costs about 20 and is really simple to rebuild.
I had a similar problem with my mower...
Will it run if you leave it on choke?

Mow your grass in 3 to 5 second intervals then take a break

Re: 2C mower runns dies runns dies (FIXED!!)

I should have listed what I've done so far in my first post. Sorry.

Ran old gas out, fresh gas.
Ran it with air filter off, sprayed carb cleaner in carb.
Checked underneath to make sure no twine, ect is stopping blade.

Will check to see if it does it on choke. I know it does it on high and low speed.

When it starts to die, if I let down on the safety (kill) handle, then raise it to mowing position (you have to hold it to mow) it revs up and runns again for another 3 to 5 seconds.

Thanks for the suggestions - even jests!

Jeff

Is it the Suzuki GTS or, well, most likely not if it's that old, but it could be Briggs or Tec., which is it???

Just got back from trying it with the choke on. Still dies. Appears that the cylinder is getting plenty of fuel, because after it dies 1 pull starts it again no problem (no priming or choke ect.).

Tried pulling choke when it was dying, but died even faster that way.

Model# is 16785 Serial# is 1000618

Thanks

Jeff

The electronic coil on that engine either works or it doesn't.
If you haven't cleaned the carb, do so, and add anew piece of fuel line...you may have a flapper inside the line that is restricting flow.
It starts and burns what's in the bowl, but is just a trickle in the line allowing start-up after it dies. A plugged fuel filter will show the same symptoms....
another thought is water in the system...If you looosen the bowl-nut and catch what drains out in a baby-food jar you can tell...It will suck it up the nozzle, die, the water drains back into the bowl, next start may have a bit of fuel until it pulls water again, dies, etc, etc...
You can pour about 2 ozs. of "Heet" in the red bottle in to help if it's water.
Sometimes it's tuff to get every bit of fluid out of the tank...

Re: 2C mower runns dies runns dies (FIXED!!)

Excellent info guys!!!! I sure appreciate the help. Borrowed my neighbors mower and did my lawn last night, so that will buy a week to work on mine.

Will put in a new coil and clean carb and install new carb kit tonight along with new fuel line and filter.

Will keep you posted on how it goes.

Here's some more info that I forgot to give so far. Last fall at the end of the mowing season it started doing it, but less often. Would run about 1 to 2 minutes then die. The mower is always stored inside except 2 weeks last summer when I needed the room - wouldn't you know it poured rain those 2 weeks. First thing I tried then was new Spark plug. Still did it.

It starts so well I think there may be some life left in it. Hate to throw $ in 14 year old mower, but won't be too much $ compared to new mower. Don't want to buy new mower at this time 'cause need $ to get the boat ready for summer.

Thanks again!

Jeff

If it is 2stroke , have a look to ensure the exhaust ports and muffler are clear of carbon.

Thanks again guys. Will try all suggestions.

Yes it is a 2C. Will look for carbon.

Local Toro Dealer has fuel line and filter, and carb tune up kit (gaskets ect.) on order. Parts are supposed to be in Wed. the 27th, so should know late next week how it came out. Will let you all know. Was going to get coil, but may not since Walleyehed says mine must be OK.

Thanks

Jeff

She's fixed!!

Here's how it wend down. Put carb kit, fuel line, fuel filter on and took muffler off and cleaned all deposits off. Started it up and ran great for over a minute!! Thought it was fixed and started mowing :) . Then it died   . Took the gas tank off again and noticed that the arm that holds the ground by the kill switch was close to the contact. Bent it about 1/4 inch away and it sprung back to 1/8 inch away. Started it again (Starts and runs better than ever BTW) and it never quit. Mowed the lawn and all is great.

Thanks again for all the help. Fell kind of dumb for not messing with the contact, but all is well now.

Jeff
