2hp mate died on me

I was cruising across the lake the other day in my fishing canoe with my 1971 2hp Evinrude. it was running perfect and after 5 min I decided to open her up to full throttle. Did perfect for about 2 min and it slowly started idling down, slower and slower until it finally died. 10 minutes of pulling the rope and an unwound recoil spring later I found myself paddling a half of a mile back to shore.
What could've happened? The fuel cap vent was open, the fuel valve was open and she was purring like a kitten. I thought maybe it got too hot so I pulled the water pump impeller today and it looks fine. I don't know how to tell if it needs replacing though.

Also, this motor being mounted to the side of my canoe sits deep in the water. The 4 water relief ports are under water when im not moving. Could this be causing it not to pump properly?

Re: 2hp mate died on me

Not much can go wrong on the fuel side of these motors, they are gravity fed and have no fuel pump. Suddenly died sounds like something in the ignition gave up the farm. It's a points/coil/condensor motor - simple to work on and parts are cheap. Pull the spark plug and check for spark, i'm willing to bet it's either weak or dead. Check compression as well, I always check it before anything else.

As for water pump, I ran a 2hp tonight in the barrel with the holes submerged, didn't seem to bother it. I then drained a little water and it ran the same, wasn't overheating either way, I check it with the laser thermo.

At least 100PSI. I use to have a 1985 2HP and mine had 125-130 PSI.
