I know this is a common subject but I need to know what the trick is to coil the recoil spring back up on my 1971 Evinrude 2hp. I was out on the lake and the motor died on me and while I was trying to crank it back up somehow the center screw in the top of the motor cover loosened and the whole thing went kapooey. Any ideas? I found a new spring on the evinrude website. Do these come wound up already to make things easier? I'm almost to the point of rigging up a way to hook my cordless drill to the flywheel and crank it that way.

Re: 2hp Mate recoil spring

Is the spring broken? If not reuse the old one. You will need to remove the bolts from underneath holding the recoil assembly and remove it from the motor. If you look at shop2.evinrude.com for your year and model and click rewind starter you will see how it goes together. The spring just needs to re-wound back into the cover in the direction shown in the diagram, then you replace the parts that you took off to gain access to the spring. I usually load up the spring and then pull the cord through the housing and then put the handle on. Sort of hard to explain, guess you'd have to attempt it.
