have a 1980 2 hp Johnson, runs fine except when I put the lever to full throttle and let go, within about 5 seconds it works its way back to about 1/2 to 3/5 throttle, the bolt holding the linkage is as tight as it can go, any suggestions? Thanks

I have the answer you seek! I have two of these suckers and know why you are having this problem. Ok under the flywheel there is a plate that the magneto points and all that stuff is mounted to. If you look close to the shaft you will see a plastic collar and a screw that is turnable with a flat head screw driver. Turn that screw in a little and you will solve your problem

another words--turn it clockwise a quarter turn and see if that gives you enough tension, then another quarter turn if needed

Thanks. I also have a 1980 2hp Johnson and it is doing the same thing. Now I know how to fix it. I think this is probably the best engine Johnson ever made. No problems for 33 years.

After some confusion, I think I got it, Thought you meant I had to remove the flywheel to access the plastic collar, but when I did that , I didn't see the collar you were describing, then after some head scratching, I looked under the plate using a flashlight, and low and behold, there it was, so tightened the screw, put flywheel back on, fired her up, and looks like its gonna do the trick, Thanks again.
