2nd coat of paint on cowl fails :(....

Well I put on a second coat of paint yesterday and left it to dry over night before checking up on it. I was disappointed at the imperfection I saw. The paint appeared to have buckled/rippled in one area of the cowl. The rest of the paint looks beautiful, except for that imperfection and a spot where the spray can decided to shoot a glob of paint out. I waited for about 5 days before applying this second coat, the directions say apply second coat within an hour or after 48 hours. Is there a reason the paint did that?, was the previous coat not dry enough? I plan on sanding that spot and painting it again but before that I want to make sure I get it right.
BTW, The first coat of paint and primer didn't have those ripples.

look like the paint got too heavy and sagged. id rather do several light coats 30-45 min apart, than have one run or sag.

That would make sense, it is on the front top corner. I'll wait for another day before sanding that spot, then I'll add some paint (hopefully last paint coat)...

Look's to me like it was a combination of heavy paint and a missed prep area.Make sure the paint is good and dry.Sand and feather out damaged area.Make sure you get it all out.Prime with filler primer with light coat's to fill in any imperfection's.You can mask off area to be primed,just make sure you knock down high edge's after you peel masking. Use 600 wet. Go easy.Take your time or you'll be doin it again. Don't touch any of it with your hand's ,wipe with CLEAN rag's (oily finger's don't mix with paint !) Lightly compound entire side and wipe with CLEAN rag,spray primed area to cover with light coat's and than feather it out toward edge's of whole side to make it uniform.The key to any paint job is prep work and no contaminant's on surface to be painted.

You may want to stop by any auto paint dealer and pick up some tack cloth to wipe it down before the final coat.It really gets the area clean and removes any oily residue or fingerprints.
Other than that one area it looks good for a spray can job
I never could get mine looking great with the rattle cans so after i put 3 coats of paint on i took it to a friend who shot 3 more coats of Dupont clear on it.Made a huge difference!

Well, the area is fixed and looking much better. The only thing is that after painting the area past the problem area received some spray mist and is a little rough to the touch. Can I sand this with high grit wetsand paper before clear coating it (maybe 1200 grit?)? The paint I used was Rust-oleum white gloss protective enamel. Thanks for the tips.

Yep, sand it and clear coat it. I've done it many times because of similar problems as you. It will look great after clear-coat. I've found scotch brite to be very handy, too.

Will do, it already looks 20x better then it did before. I can't wait to finish it.

Yes I did . I bought some off of ebay from Nana's decals....They are not the same as originals, even though original look alikes were available. I bought the red/black stripe one, they have a "clean" look. I will post the pictures as soon as they're on the cowl.

If you are using enamel, you cannot blend it like you could with lacquer paints of the past so total recoat or clearcoat is required to avoid the overspray. You may also have had a compatibility problem with the existing paiint, primer, and new paint. Anytime something is repainted and you are not sure what the base coating composition is, you should use a sealer. This forms a barrier between the old and new finishes. Primer is not a sealer unless it specifically states that. If you sanded through the original finish at any point, you can also run into compatibility issues like this.

Well, paint is on and so is clear . I sanded the rough spots with a 1500 grit wet sand paper then applied 3 coats of clear coat. The overall finish is great. There are a couple of spots where I had some clear coat running. The reason behind that is that my fat finger got in the way of spray and I had droplets of clear very visible. So I added more clear to try salvaging this, which it did help with droplets but made the clear run. The spots where the clear ran aren't as bad as they look. Now, to wait for a couple of days before applying the decals....

Here it is....before shots, then after. All that is left to do on it is paint the handle. What a difference fresh paint and decals make. I ended up using the original staples only to attach the seal, they're holding it very well. Now I have a question to everyone who's painted theirs: Should I put this cover on the motor or keep it in the house and stare at it more?

Thats awsome man!! U spent a lot of work on that and it DEFINATELY paid off!!! Looks brand spanking new!!! So how long did it take you to do EVERYTHING?

Congratulations, Great looking job KewlBird. Not only is it a vast improvement over how it looked before, but you learned a new valuable skill and have the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself. BTW, I like the new color scheme. Now, what does the rest of the engine look like. That was what I ran into after I did the new paint and decal job on my newly acquired engine. Bet you can't wait to see it in the water for the first time?

Looks like poo KewlBird, but out of sympathy I'd be willing to let you practice on my '42 HD-20.
I'm with Bralex, I like those new decals a lot better. But also, I'd like to see the whole motor. I hate to put mine in the water after a new paint job. What I like to do is put mine in the house so I can stare at 'em until I either get tired of looking at 'em or the wife's groaning gets too unbearable. Then I put 'em on the boat and take 'em for a spin. I had a guy ask me if you could still buy those ('56 10hp johnson) while I was getting gas the other day before it's not-so-maiden voyage. I said no, you can't.
How about a pic of the whole "new' rig. I'll bet it looks nice!

Time spent: 2 months (actually a few days that were warm enough to work in my shed with the heater)

Under the cover engine looks brand new, it has a factory finish on it and the finish is beautiful. I will have to do more painting on the exterior to make look as good on the outside as it is inside.

Nice job using the rustoleum cans! I also got my decals from Nana's. What do you plan to do with the rest of the motor ( as far as paint goes ) My cowl looks great after paint, the mid section looks pretty good, but I could not get Imron to stick very well to the lower unit. There were some really tough spots to sand on the lower unit, so that is probably why...but Im hoping to clean mine up a bit and paint it again...
