The new points that I put in match the old ones that I took out but they do not appear to be the right points for the distributor. The were ordered online from a supplier of Mercruiser parts so I assume they are the ones that are now available. They appear to be ok in the sense that they open and close etc. The issue is that the slot in the plate that one would use to adjust them by prying with a screwdriver does not really line up as it should. The other issue is that the book says to set them at .018 but they will not close below .019. That should be ok but again it makes me think perhaps there is or at some point was a different set of points for this distributor.

Anyone out there know for sure?

well, for my '75, the mercruiser part # would be 34235T. item #14 from here. that said. last spring i went to my local mercruiser dealer for a new set myself. i get them from my local dealer every spring, year after year. well, his points didn't fit my distributor. they were so wrong that the points wouldn't even close. in the end. i got his only set of sierra points he had on hand. sierra part # 18-5311. these fit proper and have been in service all this season w/o incident.
imho, if what you have don't fit proper, they aren't the right ones. other wise they would fit..

I ordered them from a list such as you describe. They came in plain plastic bags and not labelled as Mercuiser parts so maybe the right ones are NLA. These may be for a Chevy truck engine or such as the plate would likely be different with the vaccuum advance mechanism etc.

don't know about nla. but perhaps something is up. like maybe mercruiser sent out the wrong parts to the dealers, mabye bagged wrong or something. my dealer was sure he was providing the right part and was very surprised when i told him they wouldn't fit. told me if it'd have been anyone other than me, he'd have wanted the boat to believe me they wouldn't fit. i'm not a fan of aftermarket parts, but the sierra's filled the bill in the end for me... they work fine. it was my dealers only set he had... and i got them. lucky me... :)

If you have a NAPA close by take your old points in. They carry many parts for boats and that way you could match them up to be sure they are the same.
