2x6 T&G for boat deck?

I am helping a friend with the restore of his boat. He posted this question in his restoration thread but no responses. We are getting ready to put the deck in his boat and wanted to know your thoughts on using 2x6 T&G as the deck in the boat. He has a LOT of it leftover and would like to use up some of the material if he can. His thought was to coat both sides of the boards with resin, Use PL Premium and glue all the together as they go in, and then fiberglass the top once it was in the boat.

I told him I thought this was a interesting idea, as I have only ever seen and used plywood. Anyone else have any thoughts before we dive in?

Too heavy!!! Would it work? sure, but why would you want all that weight. Use som eplywood and find another use for the 2x6's

not a good idea.

the t&g will be small channels to collect water should there be any kind of intrusion....also it will be subject to crack at the joints as the resin will pool there and resin by it self is brittle.

it will work.....'ell.....anything will....but why is he trying to cheap out over $150 bux worth of plywood after 40 hours of labor?

Thanks guys, we did not even think about weight. This is why the forum is here! He wants to do the job right, so we will go with plywood. It was a idea that i agree now is not the best of ones.

Did some research on weight, for whoever is interested.

1 sheet of 3/4 plywood weighs 75 pounds, 2 sheets needed to complete the deck = 150 +/- pounds.

2x6 T&G doug fir weighs 2 pounds per 1 ft. According to mesurments in the boat and some calculations we will need approx 90ft of 2x6 T&G to complete the deck = 180 +/- pounds.

So if these figures are correct, it would add a extra 30 pounds to the boat.

We are still going to use the plywood because my buddy decided that ooops point was a valid one. Way too many seems for possible water intrusion. and not easy to resin. For all the extra work it would not be worth it. Plywood is the way to go. But never hurts to throw around ideas!

I thought i would post up the findings of my research for informational purposes.

if you only need 90 feet of the 6" T&G (0.5 feet wide) that is equivelant to 90*0.5=45 square feet of coverage. One sheet of plywood is 4*8=32 square feet so you would need 45/32=1.4 sheets of ply and 1.4*75=105 pounds for the plywood used. So, the difference is 180-105=75 pounds. That is for 3/4" plywood. I used 5/8" ply which is about 12 pounds per sheet lighter than the 3/4" or about 17 pounds lighter for the 1.4 sheets that will be used. That would bring the plywood weight down to about 90 pounds or 1/2 the weight of the 2x6's.
