I have an 07 90hp Merc 4 stroke that I received late in the summer of 06. It had a little use then (maybe 10-15hrs tops?) and more last summer but not a lot because of the lousy summer we had. This year the motor has probably seen just as much use as the first 2 years combined.
Anyways my questions are, what necessary/recommended mtce should this motor receive this coming fall winter before or after storage? (it receives an annual oil/filter change and lower unit oil change every fall)
My stealer is recommending a complete spark plug change, impeller change and 1 other thing which I cannot remember at this time? I can understand the impeller but should the plugs be changed as well? It starts very easy and runs great so I am a little questionable on that one. Also, I am not sure of the cost of plugs for this motor or the impeller change but I can only imagine what the dealer is going to charge me! I was going to store it at home this year and do all my fluid changes myself and plugs if needed but I am hesitant to tackle the impeller? The dealer charges around $400.00 for the oil changes and the winter storage which includes shrink wrap and a place to keep it over the winter. What do you think would be the total cost if all the work was done including the storage? I am a little hesitant to store it there again because last year when I picked it up, it was full of water(4 gals in bildge with plug in?, boat was filthy on the inside and they had a hard time finding it even though I gave them 2 weeks notice of my pick up date. This is the last year for warranty coverage (3 yr) so I am thinking maybe it is a smart move to let the dealer do all the mtce and next year when the warranty is over I will do it myself? Smart thinking?..........Irv964

If you are able to do your own oil/filter(if it has one)/lower end change, that is they way to go. Buy yourself a cover and put a bow/brace to keep the cover up so the water will run off. With such low hours, I don't think I would worry about the impeller or plugs at this point. For some reason the OEM impellers seem to last a lot longer that replacement ones. If you don't have a water pressue guage, would suggest you install one.

Thanks for the advice and no I don't have a water pressure gauge, are they hard to install and what sort of pressure should I be seeing? The stream coming out feels very strong but I never checked it when it was new. Have you ever changed one on these newer generation 4 stroke Mercs? I looked quickly for the bolts last week-end where the lower unit attachs to the head but could see anything obvious?
Any info on the pressure gauge and/or the impeller change out would be greatly appreciated...........Irv964
